Billy Joel Wiki/Bio

Billy Joel is a well-known pianist, singer, songwriter, and composer from the United States. He began his career as a member of the musical ensemble “The Echoes,” which eventually became known as “The Lost Souls.” He is regarded as one of the world’s most well-known recording artists and entertainers. For his album “Glass Houses,” he received numerous “Grammy Awards,” including the prestigious “Grammy Legend Award” in 1990. For his album “Greatest Hits Volume I and Volume II,” which has sold over 11.5 million copies, he got the “Recording Industry Association of America Diamond Award.”

Joel has experimented with a variety of musical genres, including and fusing numerous components such as romantic ballads, hard-rock elements, and jazz mixed with pop and soul. His songs have been appreciated by millions of admirers over the course of his career. Joel’s hallmark tune, “Piano Man,” catapulted him to superstardom and became a major radio smash at the time. It is still popular today and is considered one of his best songs.

Billy Joel was born William Martin Joel on May 9, 1949, in The Bronx, New York, United States, to Howard and Rosalind Nyman, a German-Jewish Holocaust survivor and talented pianist. His family moved to the Levitt homes district of Hicksville, Long Island, shortly after his birth, where he spent his youth.

He began taking piano lessons in 1953 and quickly showed a talent for the instrument. Morton Estrin, a well-known American pianist, and Timothy Ford, a musician, and lyricist, were his teachers. He formed his first band, ‘The Echoes,’ in 1963, which eventually became known as ‘The Lost Souls.’ Several of his instrumental pieces were recorded with the band. He dropped out of high school during this time to pursue a career in music.

He quit ‘The Lost Souls’ in 1967 to form ‘The Hassles,’ a new band. The band was from Long Island, and they had signed with ‘United Artists Record.’ The band published their first album, “The Hassles,” and their second album, “Hour of the Wolf,” the following year. Both albums were flops in the charts.

In 1969, he and the band’s drummer, Joe Small, departed the band and established a heavy metal combo called “Attila.” They made their debut in July 1970 with an album released by Epic Records. Due to disagreements over personal reasons, the partnership soon split.

In 1971, he obtained a solo recording contract with “Family Productions” and released “Cold Spring Harbor,” his debut solo album. The record, however, was a technical disappointment because it was mastered at an excessively fast speed. A few years later, the album was restored by Columbia Records, with certain tracks re-orchestrated or reduced.

Due to a contractual conflict, he relocated to Los Angeles and began playing piano at ‘The Executive Room’ piano bar on Wilshire Boulevard under the name ‘Bill Martin.’ He wrote his iconic hit, “Piano Man,” during this time.

In 1972, Philadelphia’s WMMR-FM radio station began broadcasting his live performance recording “Captain Jack,” which quickly became a chartbuster on the East Coast. The executives of ‘Columbia Records’ offered him a recording contract after hearing the song. Before returning to New York, he spent three years recording with Columbia Records.

In Los Angeles, he recorded the album “Piano Man” for Columbia Records in 1973. It would go on to become his first top 20 hit and gold album. In 1976, he returned to New York and formed a new band with players of his own choosing. He went on his debut concert tour the same year.

His second album, ’52nd Street,’ was released in 1978 and was described as more refined and jazzy. It is widely regarded as one of the best albums of all time. In 1979, he traveled to Cuba to take part in the ‘Havana Jam Festival,’ a three-day event held at the ‘Karl Marx Theatre.’

In 1980, he released ‘Glass Houses,’ which reached number one on the ‘Billboard Album Chart’ and remained there for six weeks. He released an album called “Songs in the Attic” in 1981. The album featured live renditions of some of his lesser-known songs from the beginning of his career. Many of his older compositions were featured on the CD, which introduced his admirers to them.

He released an album called “The Innocent Man” in 1983. The album was a tribute to the popular American music of his adolescent years, and it earned him his second Billboard success. ‘Columbia Records’ re-released his first album, ‘Cold Spring Harbor,’ in the same year. His ninth studio album, ‘The Bridge,’ was released in 1986. Billy, Ray Charles, Cyndi Lauper, and Steve Winwood collaborated on the record. It produced hit hits including “Matter of Trust” and “A Modern Woman.”

After the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, he became the first American rock star to perform in the Soviet Union. In addition, he gave performances in Moscow, Leningrad, and Tbilisi. In October of the same year, he released his live CD, titled ‘KOHUEPT’ (Russian meaning Concert). With producer Mick Jones, he released ‘Storm Front’ in 1989. Billy Joel’s eleventh studio album, ‘Storm Front,’ featured the hit track ‘We Didn’t Start the Fire.’

His final pop album, ‘River of Dreams,’ was released in 1993. In the same year, he joined a star-studded cast for a performance in Los Angeles to raise money for an AIDS project. He published ‘Greatest Hits Volume III’ in 1997. It featured two of his most well-known tracks, “To Make You Feel My Love” and “Hey Girl.”

Career

He embarked on a musical journey across the United States on January 7, 2006, and performed in 12 sold-out gigs at Madison Square Garden in New York City. ‘Columbia Records’ released ’12 Gardens Live,’ a compilation of his songs from the Madison Square Garden show, the same year. As part of his European tour, he gave a free concert in Rome in July.

He sang the national anthem at Super Bowl XLI on February 4, 2007. ‘Columbia Records’ released ‘All My Life in the same year, which was his first new pop single since 1993. California Records re-released his albums ‘Cold Spring Harbor’ and ‘Piano Man’ in 2011. Many previously unreleased studio tracks and live performances were included on the albums.

In April 2017, Joel performed the inaugural concert at the newly refurbished Nassau Coliseum. In 2019, he announced the first-ever performance at a baseball stadium, which will take place at ‘Camden Yards.’ In Los Angeles, he recorded ‘Streetlife Serenade’ for Columbia Records in 1974. The album’s track ‘The Entertainer’ turned out to be a standout. Because of the song “The Entertainer,” he gained a lot of attention. In 1977, he released ‘The Stranger,’ a collaboration with producer Phil Ramone. It was a huge hit, and it was Columbia Records’ best-selling album at the time

With producer Phil Ramone, he recorded ‘The Nylon Curtain’ in 1982. Following that, he went on tour to promote his music. One of his most ambitious recordings was ‘The Nylon Curtain.’

He released ‘Greatest Hits Volume I and II’ in 1985. It was a huge hit, with the ‘Recording Industry Association of America’ claiming it to be the third best-selling record in American history. He released ‘Fantasies and Delusions,’ a collection of his classical piano compositions, in 2001. It garnered positive feedback from the crowd and went on to become one of his most successful undertakings.

On the 151st anniversary of the ‘Academy of Music,’ he performed with the ‘Philadelphia Orchestra’ and presented his new classical piece ‘Waltz No.2′ (Steinway Hall) with the ‘Philadelphia Orchestra.’

His song “Just the Way You Are” received two Grammy Awards in 1978, in the categories of “Record of the Year” and “Song of the Year.” For his record “Live from Long Island,” he won the “ACE Award” (Award for Cable Excellence) in 1984.

In 1991, he was honored with the Grammy Legend Award, which is granted to recording artists. He received the ASCAP founding award for lifelong achievement in 1997.

He received the ‘RIAA Diamond Award’ in 1999 for his album ‘Greatest Hits Volume I & II,’ which sold over 11.5 million copies. The ‘Smithsonian Institution’ awarded him the ‘James Smithson Bicentennial Medal’ in 2000. In the same year, he was awarded an honorary doctorate in music from Southampton College, sometimes known as ‘Long Island University.’

He was honored with the ‘Johnny Mercer Award at the ‘Songwriters Hall of Fame’ banquet in New York City on June 14, 2001. Billy Joel, born May 9, 1949, in Bronx, New York, United States, is an American singer, pianist, and songwriter in the pop ballad genre whose numerous successful songs in the 1970s and 1980s made him a concert favorite.

Joel grew up in Hicksville, a middle-class suburb of Long Island, New York, where his father was a German Jewish immigrant. His parents encouraged him to study classical music, and he began piano lessons at the age of four. He began performing in bands at the age of 14, influenced by the British Invasion and soul music. In the late 1960s, he made two albums with the rock and blue-eyed soul group the Hassles, followed by a period with the heavy metal duo Attila.

Joel was recast as a singer-songwriter in 1971, and he recorded the shoddy Cold Spring Harbor for Family Productions, locking him into an exploitative long-term contract. In search of solace in Los Angeles, he performed in a small piano bar under a false name. Meanwhile, Columbia Records bosses noticed a live recording of Joel’s song “Captain Jack” and released him from his contract. Piano Man (1973), his debut Columbia album, had a hit single of the same name, which became his hallmark song, based on his piano bar experience.

52nd Street (1979), which won the Grammy for album of the year, Glass Houses (1980), and The Nylon Curtain (1980) extended Joel’s series of hit-producing, award-winning platinum albums (1982). On the final, Joel introduced his first socially concerning songs, “Allentown” and “Goodnight Saigon,” which he had previously written about romance and slices of life (about unemployed steelworkers and Vietnam War veterans, respectively). Joel was one of the first established rock singers to film music videos in the early 1980s. He married supermodel Christie Brinkley during that time (the second of his four marriages).
