Bethany Meilani Hamilton was born in Lihue, Kauai, Hawaii, on February 8, 1990, to Tom and Cheri Hamilton. Hamilton grew up in a surfing family with older brothers Noah and Tim, and began to ride the waves at a young age. She started professional surfing at the age of eight and got her first sponsorship at the age of nine.
Hamilton, a member of the Hanalei Surf Co. team, proved capable of defeating more seasoned surfers in competition. In Hawaii’s Local Motion/Ezekiel Surf Into Summer event in May 2003, she took both her age group and the free division. She placed second in the open women’s category of the National Scholastic Surfing Association (NSSA) National Championships in San Clemente, California, a few weeks later.
Tom and Cheri Hamilton had Hamilton on February 8, 1990. Noah and Timothy are her two older brothers. She started surfing at the age of eight and had her first sponsorship by the age of nine. Hamilton was home-schooled by her mother, a housewife, from the sixth grade through high school. Her father worked as a waiter in a cafe in town. She is a devout follower of Christ. Hamilton met Adam Dirks, the youth minister, through mutual friends in early 2012.

Career
Bethany Hamilton is an American professional surfer who survived a shark attack in 2003 that resulted in the loss of her left arm and has since returned to the sport. In her autobiography Soul Surfer: A True Story of Faith, Family, and Fighting to Get Back on the Board, published in 2004, she wrote about her experience. Soul Surfer, a feature film, was released in April 2011. She also has a 2019 film, Unstoppable, in which she portrays her family’s hardships and joys.
Hamilton is active in a variety of charitable endeavours, including her own charity, Friends of Bethany, which encourages amputees and teenagers to resolve obstacles by providing hope through Jesus Christ. In 2014, she published the book Body and Soul, where she used her platform as a professional athlete to encourage a fit and safe lifestyle. Bethany Hamilton: Unstoppable, a surf documentary, was released in 2019, along with a picture book and a children’s book.
There are four separate services run by the Friends of Bethany Foundation: Beautifully Flawed is a retreat for young women aged 14 to 25 who have lost limbs due to trauma.

A free group gathering to come together and share comeback stories, a night packed with stories and inspiration to resolve. Anchored in Love is a one-day experience for girls and young women ages 12 and up to help them discover their true beauty, meaning, and value.
