Ben Cardin, full name Benjamin Louis Cardin, (born October 5, 1943 in Baltimore, Maryland, United States), is an American politician who was elected to the United States Senate as a Democrat in 2006 and began representing Maryland the following year. He previously served in the United States House of Representatives from 1987 to 2007.

Cardin grew up in a political family. Meyer Cardin, his father, was a lawyer and judge who served in Maryland’s House of Delegates and was active in Baltimore politics.

An uncle and, later, a nephew served in the state legislature. Ben attended the University of Pittsburgh (B.A., 1964) after graduating from Baltimore City College in 1961, and then the University of Maryland (Juris Doctor degree, 1967), graduating first in his class. During this time, he married Myrna Edelman (1964), with whom he had two children.

Career

Cardin began his political career while still in law school, serving in the Maryland House of Delegates from 1967 to 1986. When U.S. Rep. Barbara Mikulski announced her intention to run for Senate in 1986, Cardin entered the race for her seat in the House of Representatives and won by a large margin. He served for ten terms (1987–2007), becoming well-known for his work in social services, including health care and other entitlement programmes. He was particularly involved in child welfare legislation, and he supported bills to increase child support, extend medical benefits to children, and increase tax credits for child care.

Following the announcement that U.S. Sen. Paul Sarbanes would be retiring in 2005, Cardin ran for the position. The following year, he won a hotly contested Democratic primary before easily defeating Republican challenger Michael S. Steele, the state’s lieutenant governor at the time. Cardin took office in 2007.

Cardin made a name for himself as a liberal in Congress. He was very concerned about the environment, and he introduced legislation to protect the Chesapeake Bay and to strengthen regulations for clean water. He was also involved in foreign policy, and he was appointed to the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations in 2007. Cardin was a vocal opponent of the Iraq War (2003–11). In terms of fiscal policy, he advocated for a progressive consumption tax.
