Beck had art in his genes: a mother (Bibbe Hansen), a father of musicians (David Campbell) who would arrange strings for various alternative rockers, and a grandfather (Al Hansen) who worked in Fluxus, the art movement of the 1960s. Following a short trip to the New York City East Village “anti-folk” movement, Beck returned to his home country, Los Angeles, where he played in Silverlake district coffee bars. “Loser” released for Bong Load Custom Records as an inexpensive demo became a radio smash in Los Angeles and was ultimately a nationwide phenomenon with Beck’s signature by the leading DGC label. A rapped song played over a slide guitar sample, with outstanding literary juxtapositions, such as the “drive-by body puncture.” “Loser” showed himself to be a big talent. The rest of Mellow Gold, his 1994 debut album, demonstrated his skill in a twangled mix of folk, rap, rock in the 1960s and pop cornish in each vintage.
Career
Beck’s odd contract enabled him to record other labels: K was the more conventionally folk One Foot in the Grave and Flipside the bright Stereopathic Soul Manure (both were released in 1994). But with Odelay, his 1996 major label follow-up, he acquired hero status in culture. Produced by the Dust brothers, who led Paul’s Boutique’s (1989) similarly wacky Beastie Boys album, Odelay emphasised even more hip-hop samples and the Grammy Award-winning single “Where it’s At” (with its inimitable song, “I have two turntables and a microphone”). Beck was launched as the first alternative rocker to an audience that became bored of Grunge’s sincerity. The CD received a Grammy Award for the best performance in alternative music. Adding to his range, Beck explores Brazilian pop sophistication with his following 1998 album, Mutations (partly titled after the Brazilian psychedel group Os Mutantes); Beck’s third grammy has been gained on the album.
The record support tour saw the Flaming Lips share the bill and the stage with Beck (as a back-up band). Guero Beck returned to collaborate and to genre-hopping with the Dust Brothers in its 2005 release, because his musical scavenging led to the incorporation of elements such as blues, Latin American music, rap rock, and the 70’s; Guerolito, a track by track set of deluxe Guero remixes by a large number of other producers and actors, was released later in the year. Sea Change’s producer Nigel Godrich provided a spacious psychedelic gloss to The Information (2006) which was best known for his work with Radiohead and which was full with stickers inviting listeners to make a box do-it-herself to reflect Becks’ beautiful musical parody.
Of 2008 Beck published his 10th studio album Modern Guilt, co-produced by Danger Mouse and further reflecting Beck’s fondness for psychedelic rock in the 1960s. Following a pause from recording to release multiple records — and recover from a spinal wound — Beck returned to Sea Change with the Morning Phase (2014), which he termed as a “companion piece.” This renowned work won multiple Grammy Awards, including the year’s album and the best rock album. In 2017, Beck invited other musicians to release and worked with producer Greg Kurstin on Colors, a vibrant collection of many styles of pop music. Beck worked with numerous musicians on Hyperspace (2019), mainly Pharrell Williams.
