Barbara Fairchild was born on November 12, 1950, in Lafe, Greene County, to Opal and Ulys Fairchild. She was raised in Knobel (Clay County) until she was thirteen years old when she and her family relocated to St. Louis, Missouri. Fairchild’s love of performance began at a young age when she took part in a school talent show at the age of five.

Fairchild released her first single, “Brand New Bed of Roses,” for the Norman label two years after coming to St. Louis, and it was broadcast on local television networks. Fairchild traveled to Nashville, Tennessee, after graduating from high school to seek a career in country music. Fairchild met with Jerry Crutchfield of the MCA label within a few months, and he was struck by her songwriting ability. He quickly engaged her as a writer for MCA and forwarded her recording of “Love Is a Gentle Thing” to Columbia Records, gaining her a record deal and a spot in the country charts’ top seventy. Fairchild went on to release three albums: Someone Special (1970), Love’s Old Song (1971), and A Sweeter Love (1972).
