Barbara Fairchild Wiki/Bio
Barbara Fairchild was born on November 12, 1950, in Lafe, Greene County, to Opal and Ulys Fairchild. She was raised in Knobel (Clay County) until she was thirteen years old when she and her family relocated to St. Louis, Missouri. Fairchild’s love of performance began at a young age when she took part in a school talent show at the age of five.
Fairchild released her first single, “Brand New Bed of Roses,” for the Norman label two years after coming to St. Louis, and it was broadcast on local television networks. Fairchild traveled to Nashville, Tennessee, after graduating from high school to seek a career in country music. Fairchild met with Jerry Crutchfield of the MCA label within a few months, and he was struck by her songwriting ability. He quickly engaged her as a writer for MCA and forwarded her recording of “Love Is a Gentle Thing” to Columbia Records, gaining her a record deal and a spot in the country charts’ top seventy. Fairchild went on to release three albums: Someone Special (1970), Love’s Old Song (1971), and A Sweeter Love (1972).
Barbara Fairchild is one of the best entertainers you’ll ever witness, thanks to her colorful personality, love of humor and storytelling, and exceptional skill for singing country and gospel music. She radiates genuine kindness to everyone she encounters, whether on the street or in the crowd of one of her performances.
The Teddy Bear Song, from Fairchild’s third album, was her biggest country music achievement. Fairchild was nominated for a Grammy for this number-one country and top-forty pop tune. With “Lullaby for Teddy,” she won another Grammy nomination in the category of Music for Children. Fairchild released four albums, including Love Is a Gentle Thing (1974), and 10 singles, including “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feelin'” and “Cheatin’ Is,” between 1972 and 1978. Barbara Fairchild, a country and gospel singer/songwriter, recorded her debut single when she was just 15 years old.
She signed a songwriting deal with MCA shortly after graduating from high school, but she continued to perform. She signed a recording contract with Columbia Nashville soon after, and in 1969, she released the single “Love Is a Gentle Thing.” During the 1970s, she released seven albums for Columbia, including the Top 30 smash “A Girl Who’ll Satisfy Her Man,” the Top 40 success “Color My World,” and the Top 40 song “Teddy Bear Song” from the same year.
The latter song spent two weeks at the top of the charts and even made it to the pop charts. Fairchild received a Grammy nomination for it, and it went on to become her hallmark song. She had more chart success in the later half of the 1970s, with “Cheatin’ Is” reaching the Top 15. Fairchild married Milton Carroll, an evangelical singer/songwriter, in San Antonio, Texas in 1982. Later, a failed effort at a comeback in Nashville. Fairchild joined the gospel ensemble Heirloom in 1989, and the trio issued a few of CDs in the early 1990s. The Light, Fairchild’s first solo gospel album, was released in 1991.
Her first marriage had ended in divorce by this time. Fairchild performed a couple gigs at Branson, Missouri, a country/gospel entertainment hotspot. Fairchild came to the city after the performances were well-received, securing a permanent employment with the Mel Tillis show. With her new spouse Roy Morris, she wedded and began singing and performing. The duo collaborated on several inspirational albums, including For God & Country in 2001 (which included the song “Burning Bush [God Used a Burning Bush Before]”) and Wings of a Dove in 2002. During the Christmas season, Fairchild and Morris had their own Branson production and continued to travel the United States.
