Arrow Electronics was formed in 1935 with the opening of a retail business called Arrow Radio on Cortlandt Street in lower Manhattan’s “Radio Row,” the cradle of electronics distribution. Maurice (“Murray”) Goldberg founded Arrow Radio, which marketed used radios and radio parts to retail customers.
Glenn, Green, and Waddell, a partnership founded in 1968 by three recent Harvard Business School graduates, B. Duke Glenn Jr., Roger E. Green, and John C. Waddell, led a private investor group that acquired Arrow’s controlling interest. The new leadership recognised an opportunity to change the electronics distribution sector with Duke Glenn as chairman.

The future, it appears likely, will increasingly belong to those few large distribution corporations with the financial resources, competent management, and contemporary control systems necessary to participate fully in the industry’s current consolidation phase.”Arrow assertively surged through the ranks during the 1970s decade, securing important semiconductor franchises (headed by Texas Instruments in 1970) and established sales offices in over 20 U.S. cities, boosting its electronics distribution business at an average annual pace of 34%. By the decade’s end, Arrow’s electronics distribution sales had grown to $177 million, making it the country’s second largest distributor.
Arrow’s aggressive expansion plan to achieve market dominance necessitated regular infusions of working capital, for which the business relied on numerous public bond sales that resulted in unusually high levels of debt. Additional growth funding was acquired in 1969 when Schuylkill Metals Corporation, a lead recycling company, was acquired.

In 2009, Michael J. Long succeeded Mitchell as CEO, later becoming chairman. Long joined Arrow in 1991, following the company’s merger with Schweber Electronics, where he held several executive positions from 1983 to 1990. He was a seasoned executive who held a succession of increasingly top management
