“If these acquisitions are permitted to occur, they will fundamentally change the health insurance industry,” Attorney General Loretta Lynch stated.“They would consolidate a sizable portion of the multitrillion-dollar health insurance sector into the hands of three colossal insurance companies, severely restricting competition in a number of critical marketplaces on which tens of millions of Americans rely for health care.”

Each of the four health insurers prepared to defend themselves against the lawsuits. According to Reuters, Anthem indicated that it was “committed to cooperating with the Justice Department toward a settlement.”

On February 8, 2017, United States District Judge Amy B. Jackson blocked the proposed merger of Anthem and Cigna, citing worries that the transaction will stifle competition in the health insurance industry.
