Ant and Dec are famous Comedians. Declan Donnelly OBE was born on September 25, 1975, and Anthony McPartlin OBE was born on November 18, 1975, in Newcastle upon Tyne, North East England. They played as pop musicians PJ & Duncan, the names of their characters from the film, after meeting as child actors on CBBC’s drama Byker Grove.
In 1989, McPartlin and Donnelly met on the set of the BBC children’s drama Byker Grove. They quickly became best friends after a rocky start. They are so well-known as a couple that they are hardly seen apart on television.
Donnelly was the first of the two to secure his place on the BBC children’s drama Byker Grove, including McPartlin’s short stint on the BBC children’s television series Why Don’t You? Duncan was his first role when he joined the cast in 1989. Their bond started as their storylines crossed, resulting in an on-screen and off-screen relationship. “Stay together through whatever row you have, whatever it is,” Byker Grove creator Matthew Robinson advised them, “and you might be the future Morecambe and Wise.”
In his teenage years, Donnelly also starred as a stable boy in the film version of the novel The Cinder Path. They also appeared in the 2006 sci-fi film Alien Autopsy as co-stars. The pair experimented with pop rock. “Tonight I’m Free,” a song they played as part of Byker Grove, was their first hit. The single was a hit, and the pair went on to release two albums under the moniker PJ & Duncan. During this time, their most successful hit was the BRIT Award-nominated “Let’s Get Ready To Rhumble,” for which Mark Short choreographed the video and dances, having previously collaborated with Tina Turner and Peter Andre.
Since then, they’ve pursued careers as television hosts, hosting Ant & Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway, I’m a Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here!, and Britain’s Got Talent, among others. In 2001, 2015, and 2016, they hosted the annual Brit Awards. In addition to speaking, the two also acted together in the 2006 film Alien Autopsy, in which they both played lead roles. Mitre Television, their own production house, was founded by them.
Ant & Dec were voted the eighth most influential figures in British society in a BBC poll in 2004. The pair signed a two-year golden handcuffs contract with ITV in April 2007, potentially worth £40 million, ensuring their future at the station until the end of 2009. Simon Cowell gave them the role as presenters on the upcoming ITV reality show Britain’s Got Talent in June 2007. Contestants compete for a chance to win £100,000 and a spot on the bill at the Royal Variety Performance whilst presenting and being judged by Simon Cowell, Amanda Holden, and Piers Morgan, a former Daily Mirror editor.
The series was a huge hit, attracting over 12 million viewers, which led to the pair continuing to host subsequent shows, as well as recurring appearances on the ITV2 spin-off show Britain’s Got More Talent. The twelfth season, including Saturday Night Takeaway, saw Dec host the live shows on his own. Ant and Dec’s DNA Journey, a new show on ITV that explores their DNA and introduces them to unlikely family members, ended with the couple discovering that they shared a Viking relative, making them distant cousins.
