Angus King, full name Angus Stanley King, Jr., (born March 31, 1944, Alexandria, Virginia, United States), is an American politician who was elected to the United States Senate as an Independent in 2012 and began representing Maine in that body the following year. He previously served as the state’s governor from 1995 to 2003.
King grew up in Alexandria, Virginia, where he was born and raised. After graduating from Dartmouth College with a B.A. in 1966, he went on to earn a law degree from the University of Virginia in 1969. He then worked for a legal aid organisation in Skowhegan, Maine, before becoming chief legal counsel to the United States Senate Subcommittee on Alcoholism and Narcotics in Washington, D.C., in 1972. He returned to Maine in 1975, first as a private lawyer, then as an executive and counsel for a renewable-energy firm.
He married Mary Herman in 1984, and the couple had five children. He founded Northeast Energy Management, Inc. in 1989, which was involved in energy-saving initiatives. During that time, he was also a popular host on Maine Watch, a public television show focused on statewide issues.
Career
King first entered electoral politics in 1994, when he ran for governor of Maine. He declared himself an Independent after previously being a member of the Democratic Party. King narrowly defeated his opponents, one of whom was Susan Collins, who went on to become a United States senator. King was governor for two terms (1995–2003), enacting an agenda that defied categorization as liberal or conservative.
He advocated for environmental and educational reforms, but he portrayed himself as a pragmatic small-business owner when negotiating with labour unions on issues such as minimum-wage reform. King resumed his legal career after leaving the governorship when his term-limited tenure expired, and later returned to the energy sector.
After U.S. Sen. Olympia Snowe announced her intention not to run for reelection in 2012, King ran for her seat. In a six-way race, he received 52.9 percent of the popular vote. He caucused with the Democratic Party after taking office in 2013, but he remained known for his bipartisan efforts. King announced in 2015 that he had been diagnosed with prostate cancer, and he later underwent surgery; he had previously been treated for skin cancer.
