Andrew Cuomo was born on 6 December 1957, in Queens, New York, United States. His paternal grandparents were from Nocera Inferiore and Tramonti in southern Italy’s Campania province, while his maternal grandparents were from Sicily. His younger brother, CNN journalist Chris Cuomo, is one of his four siblings. Margaret Cuomo, a well-known radiologist, is his older sibling.
In 1971, he graduated from St. Gerard Majella’s School, and in 1975, he graduated from Archbishop Molloy High School. He graduated from Fordham University with a B.A. in 1979 and Albany Law School with a J.D. in 1982.
Cuomo served as campaign manager for his father’s governorship campaign in 1982, and later joined the governor’s office as one of his father’s policy advisers and sometime Albany roommate, receiving $1 a year.
Career
Cuomo was an assistant district attorney in New York from 1984 to 1985, and he briefly worked at the law firm Blutrich, Falcone & Miller. In 1986, he formed Housing Enterprise for the Less Privy, and in 1988, he left his law practice to focus solely on HELP. Cuomo served as chair of the New York City Homeless Commission from 1990 to 1993, under the administration of New York City mayor David Dinkins, and was responsible for designing strategies to alleviate homelessness in the city and creating more housing opportunities.
From 1993 to 1997, Cuomo was the Assistant Secretary of Housing and Urban Development for Community Planning and Development. He was the 11th United States Secretary of Housing and Urban Affairs in President Bill Clinton’s Cabinet from 1997 to 2001. Cuomo was elected Attorney General of New York in 2006. Cuomo was elected Governor of New York in 2010 and has been reelected twice since defeating democratic challengers Zephyr Teachout (2014) and Cynthia Nixon (2015) in primaries (2018).
Cuomo presided over the signing of the 2011 Marriage Equality Act, which legalized same-sex marriage in New York, as well as the 2014 Compassionate Care Act, which legalized medical marijuana.
