Anderson East goes along the line between vintage rock & roll and soul within American borders. Thanks to a gravely voice that is equally suited for punchy pops and introspective people, East recorded a few of albums alone in the early 2010s before making a leap to the mainstream with Delilah in 2015. His record attracted some attention, but 2018’s Encore brought him to the billboard list and in 2018 snagged him a Grammy nod for “All on My Mind” for Best American Roots Performance.
In Athens, Alabama, a little hamlet close to Huntsville, Anderson East was born in 1988. His grandfather was a Baptist preacher, Born Michael Anderson, and gospel music was favourite at home. His household had little pop or rock so he tended to stick to everything he could hear and meticulously study, trying to make sense of Led Zeppelin or Michael Jackson’s bits and pieces of sound. When he was 10, East started to learn how to play guitar, but while his colleagues learned how to play guitar, he found it tedious and concentrated instead on creating and performing his own songs. He formed a group with his mates in the seventh grade and made his stage debut at a school talent contest. Following high school, he attended State University of Middle Tennessee in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, and he was a music engineer. However, his love for performance was too strong, and he moved to Nashville following graduation.
By 2009, East had become a professional and played with his band Deputies and his birth name Mike Anderson. That year, he published his first album under the last alias, Closing Credits for a Fire. A year later, he had changed Anderson East’s stage name and released an EP, Fire Demos.
East blinded Los Angeles for his second album, Flowers of the Broken Hearted 2012, which includes studio backgrounds such as Waddy Wachtel, Rob Wasserman and Don Heffington.
With the words of his lips spreading over him and his music, he crossed the paths with producer Dave Cobb who controlled Sturgill Simpson and Jason Isbell’s high-profile records. When Cobb founded his own label, East, Elektra Records, distributed Low Country Sound, his debut big label Delilah, was launched in July 2015. Delilah peaked at two in the heat-seeker list of Billboard and “Satisfy Me” in the AAA chart reached 18. The first song in his second album, Cobb-produced Encore, “All on My Mind,” was released in August 2017.
Arriving in January 2018, Encore ran into the Top 50 of the 200 Billboard and landed on the folk album chart at number three. He also received his first Grammy Award nomination for “All on My Mind” for Best American Roots Performance. In May 2019, East released Alive in Tennessee, his first live album. Back to the studio with co-producers Dave Cobb and Philip Towns, he began working on his fourth album in the early 2021 melancholy first single “Madelyn.” The full-length Maybe We Never Die was released by Cobb’s Low Country Sound later that year.
