Alice Walton Wiki/Bio

Alice Louise Walton is the daughter of Samuel Walton, the founder of Walmart. As of April 2019, she was listed as the world’s 18th wealthiest person and second wealthiest woman. Alice Louise Walton was raised in Bentonville, Arkansas. She got a B.A. in economics and finance from Trinity University in San Antonio and then began working for her father’s company. She immediately resigned from her post to pursue a variety of financial positions, eventually founding her own investment bank, Llama Company, which she was forced to close after ten years. Simultaneously, she began raising cutting horses and philanthropic work, eventually being the driving force behind the establishment of Northwest Arkansas Regional Airport, generously contributing to its finance. Always fascinated by art, she became an obsessive collector, eventually establishing the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in her hometown of Bentonville, which is dedicated to American art and artists. She is presently the organization’s chairperson.

Alice Louise Walton was born in Newport, Arkansas, on October 7, 1949. Samuel Moore Walton was a well-known businessman and entrepreneur, best remembered as the creator of Walmart Inc. (formerly Wal-Mart Stores, Inc) and Sam’s Club (formerly Sam’s West, Inc).Helen Robson Walton, her mother, was a notable art advocate and also served as her husband’s business partner.

Her parents relocated to Bentonville, Arkansas, a city in the state’s north-eastern region, a year after her birth, and built “Walton’s 5 & 10,” their first store carrying their name. Additionally, it was the city in which their family would finally reside.

She was always fascinated by art as a child, purchasing her first work, a reproduction of Picasso’s ‘Blue Nude,’ at the age of ten. She also enjoyed playing outside, horseback riding, and drawing watercolours with her mother on camping excursions.

She attended Bentonville High School (BHS), where she was a member of the Spanish Club, the Art Club, and the Honor Society. Additionally, she appeared in two plays, including a supporting role in ‘Pardon My Millions.’

She attended Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas, after graduating from Bentonville High School in 1967. She earned a B.A. in economics and finance from the university in 1971. Alice Walton began her employment at Walmart as a buyer of children’s clothing shortly after graduating from Trinity. However, she was not particularly skilled at it and left to work as an equity analyst and money manager for First Commerce Corporation for a little term.

She briefly worked as vice chairperson and head of all investment-related activities at the family-owned Arvest Bank Group following her departure from First Commerce Corporation. Later in life, she relocated to New Orleans and began working as a broker for the stock trading firm E.F. Hutton.

In 1979, the Securities and Exchange Commission charged Walton and eight other Hutton employees with engaging in aggressive option trading. Although she claimed she did not breach any laws, she agreed to a settlement in order to avoid lengthy litigation and was suspended from securities dealing for six months.

By the mid-1980s, she had returned to Arkansas and established a farm for the purpose of raising cutting horses. Simultaneously, she developed an interest in the family business. In 1988, she formed Llama Company as a subsidiary of Walton Enterprises.

Career

The bank, named after a llama she got as a gift, underwrote bonds, managed assets, and also made loans to other businesses. As president, chairperson, and CEO, Walton worked tirelessly to boost the economy of Northwest Arkansas, which was previously disregarded by Wall Street.

Llama Company operated for ten years before ceasing operations in 1998. However, the 1990s offered her two significant accomplishments: becoming the first woman to lead Northwest Arkansas Council and inaugurating Northwest Arkansas Regional Airport (1998).

In 1998, following the closure of Llama Company, she left the world of high finance to spend more time with her horses, relocating her farm to Texas the same year. Her Rocking W Ranch, which is situated on 3,200 acres, quickly established itself as one of the leading cutting horse breeders.

Although she spent the majority of her time in Texas caring for her horses, she returned to Bentonville in the 2000s to collect works of art. She eventually founded Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Bentonville in November 2011 with the goal of presenting American art.

In 2015, she sold her ranch and relocated to Fort Worth, Texas, in order to be closer to Crystal Bridges, which she felt required more of her attention. Since then, she has been residing there. Alice Walton is well recognised for her work on the Northwest Arkansas Regional Airport’s development. She not only provided the original money of $15 million for its construction, but also assisted in completing the project by underwriting $79.5 million in development bonds as CEO of the Llama Company.

She founded Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art with the objective of reflecting national history through art and currently serves as its chairperson. The museum does not charge admission.
