According to John Amos’s research, the majority of comprehensive coverage covered only approximately 70% of cancer treatment expenditures. The early insurance were designed to pay up to 50% of the usual cost of cancer treatment, with additional coverage to cover travel and loss of income. The rising incidence of cancer and the expensive expense of treatment contributed to the policies’ popularity. By 1959, AFLAC had written $900,000 in premiums and established a presence in Florida.

The corporation was constantly on the lookout for innovative ways to advertise its policies. In 1964, it began delivering lectures to groups rather than individuals and pioneered the highly successful ‘cluster-selling’ technique. Agents initially requested authorization from a business or group to make a presentation to its employees or members. The agent delivered a group sales pitch with the company’s implicit endorsement. This strategy enabled agents to reach a greater number of prospects in a given period of time, and the organization’s participation was a selling feature. Additionally, numerous businesses used a payroll deduction programme for premiums, which reduced AFLAC’s processing costs. By 1967, cluster-selling had increased the company’s premiums to $7 million.

Cluster-selling has proven to be an extremely effective method of selling cancer insurance. AFLAC developed an aggressive, well-paid sales team that would typically quickly sell to 5% of a group’s members. The salesman would usually return later and sign up the remaining customers. Years later, John Amos characterised the technique’s success as follows: ‘Sooner or later, a cancer will develop in the group. If he is insured, he is content, and word spreads to the rest of them. And if he is not insured, he apologises, and we collect the remainder.’

During the late 1960s, AFLAC significantly expanded its geographic reach. AFLAC’s policies were sold nationwide through an agreement with the Globe Life Insurance Company of Chicago, which was licenced to sell insurance throughout the country; Globe sold the policies and AFLAC reinsured them, allowing AFLAC to demonstrate to state insurance commissioners that the company’s policies were already available in their state and that the company was profitable. Between 1969 and 1971, AFLAC expanded from 11 to 42 states.

In 1973, AFLAC established American Family Corporation as a holding corporation. After a year in a modest collection of dwellings, the company relocated to the new 18-story American Family Center. American Family’s shares were listed on the New York Stock Exchange in June 1974.
