Aaron Blabey was born in Bendigo, Australia on January 1, 1974. He is married to Kirstie Hutton, a speech pathologist, and they have two sons. The Alannah and Madeline Foundation, which works to shield children from abuse, is supported by Blabey. Throughout the 1990s and 2000s, Blabey participated in a number of television and film appearances, as well as participating in a number of theatre productions.
He was nominated for an Australian Film Institute award in 2000 for his guest-starring appearance in the series Stingers, in addition to his 1994 award for acting in a lead role. Blabey shifted his focus from acting to art in the mid-2000s, and between 2004 and 2006, he held six solo shows around Australia.
Blabey then shifted his attention solely to the production of children’s picture books in 2006. Pearl Barley and Charlie Parsley, the first of these, was published in July 2007. The Ghost of Miss Annabel Spoon has received the Patricia Wrightson Award and the Children’s Peace Literature Award at the 2013 New South Wales Premier’s Literary Awards. Nick Cave chose The Ghost of Miss Annabel Spoon to film for the Story Box Library website in early 2014.
In 2013, his fifth novel, The Dreadful Fluff, won the Australian Publishers Association’s Best Designed Children’s Cover of the Year, and his critically praised sixth title, Noah Dreary, was published. Then came a photo book for adults called Babies Don’t Suck, which served as a reference for new fathers expecting their first child.
Blabey signed a three-book contract with Scholastic Australia in 2014, starting with Pig the Pug, a funny picture book featuring a rude, arrogant, mean-spirited dog (pug) who is always arguing and sometimes fighting with his rival playmate, the friendly, polite-mannered, good-hearted Trevor (dachshund). The book was an instant success in Australia, and it has since been adapted and distributed in many languages all over the world.
There are about 10 million Bad Guys books in print worldwide as of January 2020, and the series has spent more than 60 weeks on the New York Times Bestseller List.
On March 9, 2018, DreamWorks Animation announced that an animated feature film version of The Bad Guys was in progress, with a screenplay written by Etan Cohen. The project began development on October 17, 2019, with a planned release date of September 17, 2021. The film is directed by animator Pierre Perifel in his feature directorial debut, with Damon Ross and Rebecca Huntley producing and Etan Cohen and Hillary Winston writing the screenplay.
