NFL football club is headquartered in Detroit, Michigan, United States. With four NFL titles under their belts, the Lions compete in the National Football Conference (NFC) of the National Football League (1935, 1952, 1953, and 1957).

The franchise was established in Portsmouth, Ohio in 1930 and had its headquarters there. The Spartans were one of two early NFL teams from tiny towns (the other was the Green Bay Packers). The Spartans had a mediocre season but made the playoffs for the first time in league history, losing to the Chicago Bears 9–0 in the championship game. As a result of the sale, the team was moved to Detroit in 1934 and given the moniker “Lions” to go along with the city’s baseball team, the Detroit Tigers. Ownership of the Lions established a long-standing tradition in their first season in Detroit by scheduling a game on Thanksgiving Day, which has since included a Lions’ home game each year (except during World War II). The single-wing tailback Earl (“Dutch”) Clark led the Lions to their first NFL title in 1935.

The Lions had a dismal decade in the 1940s, with just two playoff appearances. Byron R. (“Whizzer”) White, a running back and future U.S. Supreme Court justice who played for the club in Detroit from 1940 to 1941, was the most noteworthy player during this time period. Two future Hall of Famers, quarterback Bobby Layne and running back Doak Walker, joined the Lions prior to the 1950 season, and the squad improved dramatically the following year. Both in 1952 and 1953, the Lions defeated the Cleveland Browns in the NFL championship game. The two teams met again in the 1954 championship game, with the Browns coming out on top. To capture a third championship in six years, the Lions faced the Browns on a fourth occasion in 1957, with Detroit easily defeating Cleveland by 45 points.

Even though they had a fierce defense featuring defensive back Dick (“Night Train”) Lane, tackle Alex Karras, and linebackers Joe Schmidt and Wayne Walker, the team had less success in the 1960s, finishing second in their division to the Green Bay Packers from 1960 to 1962. They also missed the playoffs for much of the decade. A memorable preseason appearance by writer George Plimpton as the Lions’ “last-string” quarterback in 1963 is documented in his book Paper Lion (1966) and later in the film of the same name, both of which are based on the author’s true story. In the 24 years between 1958 and 1981, the Lions never made it to the playoffs once, although being far from dreadful on a season-to-season basis, finishing with winning percentages around.500.

The Lions made it to the playoffs twice in the early 1980s, losing to the Washington Redskins in the first round despite finishing with a 4–5 record during the strike-shortened 1982 season. The Lions’ first-round playoff experience in 1983 ended in defeat, and by the mid-1980s, they had fallen to the bottom of their division.

Detroit Lions Biography/Wiki

When the Lions selected running back Barry Sanders in the second round in 1989, he went on to make the Pro Bowl nine times in his ten years in the league, revitalizing the team. They reached the playoffs four times between 1992 and 1997 before falling to the Redskins in the 1991 NFC title game. The Lions, on the other hand, never made it past the first round of the postseason in either of those years.

Despite having no prior front-office experience, the team appointed Matt Millen, a former NFL linebacker, as general manager in 2001. While he was coach, Millen presided over one of the most catastrophic eras in NFL history for the Lions, who went 31–84 during his time with the team. Many fans protested his continuing employment. After the Lions went 0–16 for the first time in league history in 2008, he was fired early in the season.

A formidable passing attack around quarterback Matt Stafford and All-Pro wide receiver Calvin Johnson was developed in Detroit after they were selected first overall in the 2009 NFL draught. In 2011, the Lions made it to the playoffs for the first time in twelve years. Those two winning seasons were immediately followed by two dismal ones, which prompted another coaching change and another attempt at rebuilding. The team won 11 games in 2014 under the new leadership to make a comeback in the playoffs, where they fell in the first round to the Los Angeles Clippers. In 2016, after missing the playoffs the year before, the Detroit Red Wings came back and earned a postseason place, however, they were defeated in their first game. After that, the Lions went a postseason-free spell, finishing the year 3–12–1.
