American football quarterback Drew Brees, born on January 15, 1979, in Dallas, Texas, set numerous NFL single-season and career passing records, including the all-time marks for pass completions, passing yards, and passing touchdowns. He played in the National Football League (NFL) for the Dallas Cowboys from 2001 to 2007. As head coach of the New Orleans Saints, he guided the team to its first Super Bowl victory (2010).

On the football field, Brees was a standout as a high school student and athlete in Austin, Texas, where he led his team to a state championship and was named Texas 5A Offensive Player of the Year in 1996. He went to Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana, despite the fact that the main collegiate programs in his native state rejected him because he was too little and too weak-armed (6 feet [1.83 meters] tall).

Three years ago he was an All-Big Ten performer as a starter at Purdue, where he set records for throwing yards and touchdowns, among other things. For 34 years, he led the Purdue Boilermakers to the Rose Bowl as a senior and was voted the Heisman Trophy’s third-best quarterback in the voting.

The San Diego Chargers selected Brees with the first overall pick in the 2001 NFL Draft. The Chargers promoted him to starting quarterback in his second season, but he couldn’t do much to turn around the team’s fortunes. By his third season, he had been replaced by 41-year-old Doug Flutie. People in San Diego felt that Brees’s days were numbered when the Chargers acquired talented rookie quarterback Philip Rivers in 2004.

In spite of this, Brees was the Chargers’ starting quarterback in 2004, leading the team to a surprise 12–4 record and receiving the NFL’s Comeback Player of the Year title as well as Pro Bowl honors. After a competent albeit unspectacular season in 2005, the Chargers were reluctant to sign Brees to a long-term contract because of a shoulder injury in the season finale. As a result, Brees signed with the Saints as a free agent.

It was Brees who turned the Saints’ fortunes around the previous season when they went from 3-13 to 10-6 and into the NFC championship game, which was their first postseason appearance since 1998. He topped the league in passing yards while playing for Sean Payton’s creative scheme and was nominated to the first team of the Pro Bowl for his accomplishments. With 5,069 yards passing in 2008, Brees fell 15 yards short of Dan Marino’s single-season record, but he made it to the Pro Bowl once more for his efforts.

Brees was a two-time Pro Bowler in 2009, and he established an NFL record by completing 70.6% of his passes that season. But perhaps most importantly, he guided the Saints to their first-ever 13-game winning streak and their first-ever Super Bowl berth with a win over the Indianapolis Colts. Brees completed 32 passes for 288 yards and two touchdowns in the Super Bowl, tying the Super Bowl record he shared with Tom Brady. He was awarded the game’s MVP.

New Orleans Saints Biography/Wiki

While Brees took the Saints back to the postseason in his second season as head coach, the team was stunned in the first round by a 7-win Seattle Seahawks team headed by Russell Wilson. Brees finished the 2011 season with 5,476 passing yards, breaking Marino’s single-season record. (In 2013, Peyton Manning overtook Brees’ record by one yard.) In addition, he set an NFL record by passing for more than 300 yards in 13 games and tossed a career-high 46 touchdown passes while also breaking his own league completion percentage record (71.2).

At the end of the 2012 season, he had 5,177 passing yards and 43 touchdowns, both league highs, breaking Johnny Unitas’ record for most consecutive games in which he threw a touchdown pass. Brees threw for 5,162 yards in 2013, his fourth season of at least 5,000 passing yards (at the time, no other player in NFL history had more than one).

As in 2013, the Saints finished 7–9 in a poor division (all four NFC South teams finished the season with a losing record) to miss a postseason spot behind Roethlisberger’s 4,952 passing yards, although he was again the league’s leading passer in 2014. With 4,870 and 5,208 passing yards in his second season, Brees led the NFL, but the Saints remained stagnant, posting back-to-back 7–9 records.
