EVERETT, Washington (30 June 2010) — Kevin Rivers (Bristol, Conn.), an outfielder who played baseball at Franklin Pierce University from 2007 to 2009, has been selected the Northwest League Offensive Player of the Week for the week ending June 27. Rivers is presently a member of the Everett AquaSox, the Seattle Mariners’ Class-A short-season affiliate.

Rivers hit.435 (10-for-23) with one double and one home run in seven games last week, driving in five runs and scoring seven times. In the week, he had two multi-hit games, both against the Yakima Bears. On Tuesday, June 22, he went 2-for-4, drove in a run, and scored twice, and then went 3-for-4 and drove in a run two days later on Thursday. Rivers has reached base safely in each of Everett’s first 12 games this season.

Rivers is hitting.381 (16-for-42) on the season, with two doubles, one triple, and two home runs. He has also driven in ten runs and scored ten times. He presently has a.619 slugging percentage and a.471 on-base percentage.

Rivers, a 2009 All-East Region pick at Franklin Pierce, is not the only former Raven enjoying success this season in the Mariners’ development system. Scott Savastano, who attended Rindge from 2006 to 2008, is now hitting.333 (33-for-99) in 29 games with the West Tennessee Diamond Jaxx, Seattle’s Double-A, Southern League club. The Frederick Keys will no longer compete in the Carolina League or serve as the Baltimore Orioles’ minor-league club, capping a historic 31-year tenure with the team that began in 1989.

The Keys are being drafted out of the Orioles’ system following Major League Baseball’s major overhaul of its minor minors in an effort to increase player experience and revenue. The MLB and MiLB previously shared a connection defined by the Professional Baseball agreement, which expires at the conclusion of the 2020 season.

The Major League Baseball is consolidating its affiliates from 160 to 120 and abolishing the rookie and short-season Class A levels. Each MLB organization will eventually have only four teams in its system. The Norfolk Tides, Bowie Baysox, Delmarva Shorebirds, and Aberdeen Ironbirds will join the Orioles.

The Keys (4,392) drew more fans per game than the Baysox (3,256), Shorebirds (3,264), and Ironbirds (3,264), according to 2019 attendance numbers (3,199). “Some teams will not make the playoffs,” Ken Young, president, and owner of the Frederick Keys, Bowie Baysox, and Norfolk Tides, told the Baltimore Sun. “There simply will be.”

However, I believe and believe that they should have looked more closely at how to manage that and, if that is what they desired, spread it out over a longer period of time.” In the fall, a source close to one of the Orioles’ minor league organizations told RMNB that the Keys were likely to join the Washington Nationals as an affiliate next season. Another individual with knowledge of the Keys verified the report. The Frederick News Post released an article titled Could the Frederick Keys Become a Nationals Affiliate in mid-November.

The Keys will now join the MLB’s newly formed Draft League as the sixth and final team. The Draft League will serve as a showcase league for players likely to be selected in the 2017 MLB Draft.

Five additional east coast franchises had been added to the league, including the Mahoning Valley Scrappers (New York-Penn League), State College Spikes (New York-Penn League), West Virginia Black Bears (New York-Penn League), Williamsport Crosscutters (New York-Penn League), and Trenton Thunder (New York-Penn League) (Eastern League). The MLB Draft League will run a 68-game season during the summer and will feature some of baseball’s most promising prospects.

Frederick Keys Biography/Wiki

However, the MLB Draft League will not be the same for longstanding Frederick Keys and Baltimore Orioles supporters in this area. The Keys won Carolina League championships in 1990, 2005, 2007, and 2011 and have produced MLB stars such as Manny Machado, Nick Markakis, and Matt Wieters.

They’re also probably why I became a sports reporter. When I was a child, my father frequently took me and my elder brother Brandon to games, where we saw stars such as Brady Anderson, CC Sabathia, and Chipper Jones in action. When the Keys won the league championship in 1990, Tyrone Kingwood dashed into the crowd, pulled a five-year-old me onto his shoulders, and ran me around the bases while the players celebrated.

This is one of the oldest recollections I have. 24 years later, Dan Steinberg bestowed upon me the extraordinary opportunity of writing for the Washington Post about Orioles’ first-round choice Dylan Bundy, who was back in Frederick rehabbing his arm following Tommy John surgery. That story was eventually published in the newspaper, which is one of my happiest experiences as a writer.

Prior to co-founding RMNB with Peter Hassett, I co-founded a website called Matt Wieters Facts with Daniel Moroz, which was so much fun and garnered so much attention — it was even covered on SportsCenter — that it inspired me to make this my career.
