The Chicago Bulls are a National Basketball Association (NBA) franchise based in Chicago (NBA). Bulls legend Michael Jordan, who played for them from 1991 to 1998 and won six NBA titles with them, is undoubtedly the most well-known name linked with the franchise.

The squad was founded in 1966 and had the greatest record for an NBA expansion team—33 wins and 48 losses—in its first season. Bob Love, Chet Walker, Jerry Sloan, and Norm Van Lier led the Bulls to the playoffs every year from 1969–70 through 1974–75, although they only got past the first round twice.

The Bulls slipped into mediocrity after the departure of the dynamic foursome, posting losing seasons throughout most of the late 1970s and early 1980s. During the NBA draught in 1984, Chicago selected Michael Jordan with the third overall pick and the team began its journey to greatness. During the 1984–85 NBA season, Jordan was named NBA Rookie of the Year, leading Chicago to their first playoff appearance in 14 years. However, the Bulls fell in the first round of the playoffs in each of Jordan’s first three seasons, despite his excellent individual performance.

When Scottie Pippen joined the Bulls in 1987, he was the perfect complement to Jordan’s talents and drastically improved the team’s overall excellence. “Triangle offense” was implemented by Jackson and assistant coach Tex Winter, a system of attack based on the precise spacing of players and movement without the ball, which prohibited opposition defensive players from double-teaming Jordan. Since they had a new offense in place thanks to the emergence of players like Horace Grant and Bill Cartwright, Jordan and Pippen led the Pistons to the Eastern Conference finals in 1990 before falling in seven games to the Boston Celtics.

The next year, the Bulls finally vanquished their relentless opponents, sweeping Detroit in four games to secure a seat in the 1991 NBA Finals, where the Bulls defeated the Los Angeles Lakers to capture their first championship. It was the first time since the Boston Celtics won eight in a row between 1959 and 1966 that an NBA club had won three consecutive titles since the Bulls in 1992 and 1993.

It was after Jordan’s retirement in 1993–94 that the Bulls suffered their first playoff loss since Jordan’s departure, as they were knocked out by the Miami Heat in Game 2 of the 1994 NBA Finals. Jordan returned to the Bulls in March 1995, but his late arrival on the roster was not enough to avoid another early elimination from the playoffs for the Bulls that year.

A flamboyant and controversial star rebounder Dennis Rodman was added to the club in the 1995 summer, and the Bulls set an NBA record with 72 wins and only 10 losses (which was broken by the Golden State Warriors in 2015–16). The Chicago Bulls won the 1996 NBA Finals by defeating the Seattle Supersonics. In 1997 and 1998, the Bulls won the NBA championship by defeating the Utah Jazz in the finals.

Chicago Bulls Biography/Wiki

Following the 1997–98 season, after leading the team to six championships in eight years, Jackson made the decision to leave Chicago after growing dissatisfied with the team’s management, particularly with general manager Jerry Krause, to whom some had attributed much of the credit for the Bulls’ triumph. Rodman signed with the Lakers after Pippen demanded a trade and Jordan retired for the second time because of his departure. Due to a sudden loss of its three greatest players in Michael Jackson and Co., the suddenly reduced Bulls went on to finish last in the Eastern Conference for the next four years in a row.

After missing the playoffs for three straight years beginning in the 2004–05 season, the Chicago Blackhawks made a successful comeback through a methodical rebuilding process. Even though Derrick Rose, the Bulls’ standout point guard, helped the team to league-best records in 2010–11 and 2011–12, both seasons the Bulls went on to lose in the Eastern Conference finals before being beaten by the eighth-seeded Philadelphia 76ers in the NBA playoffs.

However, despite losing their star player, the Bulls made it to the playoffs in both seasons he was sidelined by injury. In the 2014–15 season, Rose appeared in roughly a third of the Bulls’ games, and the club made the playoffs but lost in the second round. Despite a coaching change in the off-season, the Bulls finished the 2015–16 season with a 42–40 record and broke their seven-season playoff streak.

To make room for rising star Jimmy Butler and hometown hero Dwyane Wade, the franchise let Rose walk free the next off-season. The Bulls were able to return to the playoffs in 2016–17, however, they were defeated in the first round. Following that season, the Bulls parted ways with Wade and Butler, resulting in a 14-game drop in wins and the beginning of a rebuilding effort.
