Montreal Canadiens wikiQuebec Nordiques, a minor league baseball team with its home in Winnipeg. The Montreal Canadiens have won more Stanley Cups than any other team in NHL history (24), making them the most successful franchise ever. They are the league’s longest continuously functioning team.

The Montreal Canadiens were one of the original franchises in the National Hockey Association, which became the NHL in 1921. (which was formed in 1917). It was the 1915–16 season when the Montreal Canadiens won their first Stanley Cup title, defeating the Pacific Coast Hockey Association’s Portland Rosebuds in a thrilling five-game series. Before World War II, center Howie Morenz was widely regarded as the best player in hockey history. He became a member of the team in 1923 and guided Montreal to three Stanley Cup championships.

The Montreal Canadiens moved into the Montreal Forum during the 1926–27 season, and it served as their home stadium for 70 seasons (during which time they won 22 Stanley Cups) before the team left in 1996. A 12-year gap followed after Montreal’s fourth Stanley Cup victory in the 1930–31 season, the Canadiens’ longest drought of this century.

In 1942, the Canadiens signed future Hall of Fame right wing Maurice (“Rocket”) Richard, who would go on to lead the team in goals scored throughout his tenure. Toe Blake, Richard, and Elmer Lach formed the high-scoring “Punch Line,” and the three played on Stanley Cup-winning Canadiens teams in 1944 and 1946. Even though Blake left the organization after the 1948–49 season, he returned as head coach before the 1955–56 campaign and guided the Canadiens to their most successful time.

Henri (“Pocket Rocket”) Richard, Doug Harvey, and Jacques Plante were all part of Blake’s star-studded team that won five straight Stanley Cups between 1956 and 1960. Blake managed the Canadiens to three more Stanley Cups before stepping down from coaching in 1968. During his 13 years as a coach, his teams finished no lower than second once. A series of four consecutive Stanley Cup wins from 1976 to 1979 by teams coached by Scotty Bowman and featuring future Hall of Famers Guy Lafleur, Ken Dryden, and Larry Robinson helped Montreal remain dominant in the 1970s.

Montreal Canadiens Biography/Wiki

In the 1980s, the Canadiens slowed down a bit, even by their own lofty standards. Despite making the playoffs every year, the team only managed to win one Stanley Cup during the decade. Patrick Roy, the rookie goaltender on the championship team in 1985–86, went on to win the Conn Smythe Trophy (given to the postseason’s most valuable player) at the age of just 22. He later retired as the NHL’s all-time leading goaltender after concluding his career with the Colorado Avalanche. In the 1992–93 season, the Canadiens earned their 24th Stanley Cup triumph with Roy in the net.

For the remainder of the decade and into the new millennium, Montreal’s performance dwindled. The Canadiens made the playoffs seven times in the thirteen seasons from 1993–94 to 2006–07, but never got past the second round. The eighth-seeded Montreal Canadiens defeated the top-seeded Washington Capitals in seven games in the 2009–10 postseason (becoming the first eight-seed to upset a one-seed after trailing a series three games to one).

They then beat the defending Stanley Cup champion Pittsburgh Penguins in the conference semifinals before falling to the Philadelphia Flyers in game seven of the conference finals. By the mid-2010s, the Canadiens had established themselves as a premier NHL team thanks to the brilliance of star goalkeeper Carey Price, and they went on to reach the conference finals again in 2014–15. A brief period of success followed, but it was short-lived. The Canadiens had their poorest record since 2000-01 and missed the playoffs as their comeback failed to reach the heights the team had expected.

Montreal made a postseason appearance after a COVID-19 regular season shortfall in 2019–20, however, they were eliminated in the first round. Because of the persisting COVID pandemic, the NHL had to play the 2020–21 season with four interim divisions made up of teams that only played each other during the regular season and the first two rounds of the postseason. Even though the NHL’s seven Canadian teams were split into two groups for the divisional playoffs, Montreal was able to advance despite being the lowest-seeded playoff team in its group. The Canadiens advanced to the Stanley Cup Finals, where they lost to the Tampa Bay Lightning in five games after defeating the Vegas Golden Knights.
