Sacramento Kings wikiWestern Conference of the National Basketball Association (NBA) Western Conference-based Sacramento Kings professional basketball team (NBA). As the Rochester Royals of New York, the team won an NBA title in 1951.

National Basketball League (NBL) member the Rochester Royals were created in 1945. (NBL). After winning the NBL title in its first season in the league (1945–46) and making the NBL finals in each of the next two years, the team became an instant success. When the NBL and the Basketball Association of America (BAA) merged in the next season to establish the NBA, it transferred to the new league.

Bob Davies, Bobby Wanzer, and Arnie Risen, three future NBA Hall of Famers, led the Royals to the NBA title in 1950–51, beating the New York Knicks in a seven-game series. Though they didn’t win another championship, the Royals were among the finest early NBA teams, making three appearances in division finals (similar to conference finals) from 1949–50 to 1953–54. Since that season, the Royals have never finished above.500 in any of their ensuing decade-long seasons.

A total of 500 as the Royals team was replaced by youthful talents such as forwards Jack Twyman and Maurice Stokes (their continuing relationship, especially after Stokes became handicapped, is one of the professional sport’s most interesting stories). The Royals relocated to Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1957, and added Wayne Embry to the squad the following year, as the NBA continued to flourish during the 1950s.

Royals got Oscar Robertson in 1960 as a territorial pick from the University of Cincinnati’s outstanding guard. The “Big O” led the Royals to two consecutive division finals appearances in 1962–63 and 1963–64, both of which they lost to the eventual champion Boston Celtics. While Jerry Lucas, a future Hall of Famer from Ohio State, was selected in the 1963 draught, the club failed to go past the first round of the playoffs in any of its three prior 1960 postseason appearances.

A group of Kansas City, Missouri-based businessmen purchased the floundering Royals in 1971 after they were coached by Bob Cousy (1969–73). Kings were the moniker of the team that relocated to Kansas City before the 1972–73 season after Cincinnati’s MLB team had already taken over the name “Royals” for themselves. The Kansas City–Omaha Kings were the team’s nickname for its first three seasons after moving from Kansas City to Omaha, Nebraska.

Nate “Tiny” Archibald was an all-star guard for the Kansas City Chiefs during the team’s first 13 seasons in the city, although the team was unimpressive throughout this time, making the playoffs just once and moving past the first round of playoffs only once, despite a 40–42 regular season. For the second time in a decade, the Kings were sold to an out-of-state ownership group in 1983 and relocated to Sacramento in 1985.

While all-star shooting guard Mitch Richmond was on the team for most of the 1990s, the Kings went winless in their first 13 seasons in Sacramento, finishing last or second-to-last 10 times. King’s fortunes began to change in 1998–99 when they made their first of eight postseason appearances. ‘ When the team, headed by Chris Webber and Peja Stojakovic, had the best NBA record and advanced to the Western Conference finals, it lost to the Los Angeles Lakers in a thrilling seven-game series.

Since the 2006–07 season, Sacramento has not made the playoffs, and the team has become recognized more for its managerial and off-court instability than for its on-court play. An American professional basketball player and the first African American to serve as a general manager of a major sports organization.
