James Blake Wiki/Bio

Songwriter and producer James Blake Litherland is from England. On September 26, 1988, he was born in London, England.

A series of 2010 EPs, such as CMYK and Klavierwerke, first garnered him attention, and in 2011 he published his self-titled debut album. In the BBC’s Sound of 2011 poll, Blake came in second place. On February 7, 2011, he published his self-titled first album in the United Kingdom, and it was nominated for the 2011 Mercury Music Prize. Overgrown, his second album, was nominated for the Mercury Prize in 2013. His third album, The Colour in Anything, was published in 2016. In 2019, he released his fourth album, Assume Form.

While working as a producer for artists like Beyonce, Kendrick Lamar, Vince Staples, and Frank Ocean, he has worked with artists like Mount Kimbie. As Harmonimix, Blake has published remixes as well.

‘Retrograde’, his second album, came out a few years after his initial album, which carried UK bass culture onto previously unimagined paths of reflection.

While Massive Attack and the Aphex Twin have long since vacated their respective thrones, ‘Retrograde,’ his latest release, showcases his electronic soul side with a skyscraper of soaring synths. This electronic soul testament marks him out as the successor to their respective thrones.

An passion in and ability for music were evident at an early age for James Blake, the son of musician James Litherland. he was classically trained in piano as a child, and attended Grange Park Primary School, Winchmore Hill, and The Latymer School in Edmonton, Alberta, for primary and secondary education, respectively. Afterwards, he studied Popular Music at Goldsmiths College, University of London. The “Bass Society” Blake and his pals staged at school included UK acts such as Distance, Skream, and Benga throughout their time there.

His 1-800 Dinosaur tour included two gigs in San Francisco in December 2016, and he announced that he will be giving the revenues from those shows to the victims of that city’s recent tragedy.

Since he was a child, he has been obsessed with music. Instead of participating in school choir or orchestra, he opted to play the piano at home with the lights off.

Career

He collaborated with Kanye West on the song in 2012, when he was still in high school. However, after a long period of effort, they were still unable to produce music worthy of a release.

When he first became famous, he had a hard time dealing with the attention he received. He was plagued by anxiety and claustrophobia at the same time.

Having a solitary lifestyle and an obsessive desire to create flawless music led to mental health issues.

Theresa Wayman, a guitarist in the Warpaint band, was Blake’s first love. Jameela Jamil, an actress, is now dating him. In 2015, the singer and actress began seeing each other. At Wimbledon in 2015, they were sighted together, and they now reside together in West Hollywood, California. Both Jameela Jamil and James Blake have worked as DJs for BBC Radio 1, but their paths have diverged thereafter. The Good Place’s Jamil is a rising sensation in Hollywood.

Blake attributes his improved mood to spending time with his girlfriend. He appreciates how she assisted him in ending poisonous relationships and coping with his past traumas.

With the release of his debut 12″ album, “Air & Lack Thereof,” in July 2009 in the United Kingdom, Blake launched his music career while continuing to record songs in his bedroom. Extended play by Hemlock label was a favourite of BBC Radio 1 DJ Gilles Peterson once it was published. Immediately following the publication of the album, Peterson approached Blake to conduct a special mix for his worldwide radio show, which included an exclusive Mount Kimbie tune. He created the Klavierwerke EP as a second-year composition assignment at Goldsmiths and received top honours for it.

In 2010, R&S Records published the CMYK EP, the third EP in the “CMYK” series. DJ Nick Grimshaw of BBC Radio 1 selected the title tune, “CMYK,” as his Record of the Week, and other DJs have played it as well. “Limit to Your Love” by Blake was named Zane Lowe’s “Hottest Record in the World” on September 29, 2010. Feist wrote and composed the song, which can be found on her debut studio album, The Reminder. On November 28, 2010, the single was released in the United Kingdom and debuted at number 47 on the UK Singles Chart.

Producer, singer, and composer James Blake became well-known for his distinctive sound, which fused soulful R&B vocals with dubstep’s deep bass and simple rhythms. A succession of 12″ singles made him famous in 2009, and his self-titled album in 2011 made him a household name around the world. Over the next few years, his fame grew, and he worked with artists like Beyoncé, Kendrick Lamar, and Bon Iver, among others.

In 2013, he won the coveted Mercury Prize for his second album, Overgrown. The Colour in Anything from 2016 and Assume Form from 2019 both had strong chart placements and critical acclaim when released in the mid-2010s. Friends That Break Your Heart, Blake’s fifth studio album, was released in 2021 and featured contributions from SZA, JID, SwaVay, and Monica Martin.

Blake, who was born in London in 1988 as James Blake Litherland, grew up in a musical household. From an early age, he received classical piano instruction and remained dedicated to music throughout his academic career. During the mid-2000s, he and his friends grew enamoured with electronic music, particularly dubstep, which began to take hold in London.

While creating his first original tunes, he drew inspiration from early U.K. dubstep artists like Burial, Distance, and Skream, as well as textural R&B pioneers like D’Angelo. Blake’s R&B-infused dubstep made its debut on the Hemlock label in 2009 with the release of his Air & Lack Thereof 12″. In the same year, the well-known Soul Jazz label selected the track for inclusion on their Steppas’ Delight 2 compilation.

The Bells Sketch (Hessle Audio, March), CMYK (R&S, June), Klavierwerke (R&S, October), and the single-sided Limit to Your Love (R&S, October) were all well-received 12″ releases for Blake in 2010, which was a breakout year for him (Atlas, November). Blake’s first full-length album, released the following February, was preceded by a version of Feist’s song, in which Blake’s sincere vocals took centre stage. It was nominated for a Mercury Prize, but lost to PJ Harvey’s Let England Shake, which had a bigger impact.

The Order 12″ marked Blake’s return to Hemlock, and the six-track EP Enough Thunder, which included a Bon Iver collaboration and a version of Joni Mitchell’s “A Case of You,” saw him switch to Atlas. Love What Happened Here, the band’s third 12-inch, was released at the end of the year. While working on his second album in 2012, Blake released new music under the name Harmonimix and performed fewer shows while the new tracks matured. Overgrown, a collaboration with Brian Eno and RZA, was released in April 2013. “Retrograde,” one of the album’s highlights, won an Ivor Novello Award for Best Contemporary Song in recognition of Blake’s songwriting.

Blake hasn’t released anything new in the last three years, save from a collaboration with Airhead and an EP on his 1-800 Dinosaur label. When Beyonce’s Lemonade was released in April 2016, he appeared again. The Colour in Anything, his third album, was released a few weeks later with barely a few hours’ notice. In addition to Bon Iver and Frank Ocean’s input, the album was recorded at Rick Rubin’s Malibu studio. For its first week, it topped the U.S. Dance/Electronic chart and entered the Billboard 200’s Top 40.

Blake collaborated with Kendrick Lamar, Future, and Jay Rock on “King’s Dead” and “Bloody Waters” on the soundtrack to Black Panther in 2018, both of which were co-written by Lamar and performed by the rapper. For the first time in his career, Blake won a Grammy for Best Rap Performance with “King’s Dead,” his first Grammy after several nominations. From “If the Car Next to You Moves Ahead” in January to “Don’t Miss It” in May, several singles appeared in 2018.

The experimental electronic artist Oneohtrix Point Never and the mainstream rapper Travis Scott have both used Blake’s production and vocals on their new albums this year. With guest appearances from Metro Boomin and Andre 3000, as well as Travis Scott, he released his fourth album, Assume Form, in January 2019. The album was nominated for a Grammy in the Best Alternative Music Album category. After that, he released the EP Before, followed by the aptly called Covers EP in the winter of the following year. “Say What You Will” was released in early 2021 by Blake prior of the release of his fifth studio album, Friends That Break Your Heart.
