Mike Modano Wiki/Bio

The Minnesota North Stars were founded in 1967 and were situated in Bloomington, a suburb of Minneapolis, at the time. Despite concluding the season with a losing record, the North Stars had a passable debut season, making the playoffs and winning their first-round series. As the first NHL player to die from a game-related injury, Bill Masterton, a center, was killed in January 1968 when he fell and slammed his head on the ice without a helmet on.

The North Stars qualified for the playoffs in four straight seasons (1969–70 to 1972–73), but in 1973 the team launched a six-season losing skid. The team was sold to the owners of another struggling NHL franchise, the Cleveland Barons, in 1978 due to financial difficulties in the late 1970s. The North Stars were formed as a result of this unique arrangement, in which the two teams were united into one.

It was the first time that the North Stars made it to the Stanley Cup finals, losing in five games to the New York Islanders in 1979–80. Minnesota had five more seasons between 1981–82 and 1985–86 in which it qualified for the playoffs but did not advance past the conference finals thanks to the play of right-wing Dino Ciccarelli and center Neal Broten. After a seven-year losing drought, the squad made it to the playoffs four times in the following seven seasons.

The North Stars were knocked out in the first round every time, with the significant exception of the 1990–91 playoffs, in which they advanced to the second round. That season, the North Stars (which included Broten and Brian Bellows) defeated the Chicago Blackhawks and the St. Louis Blues, the NHL’s two best-recorded teams at the time, before falling to the Pittsburgh Penguins in Stanley Cup finals.

After a string of poor seasons, Minnesota was unable to raise the money it needed to compete in this year’s NBA Finals. He relocated to Dallas in 1993 after failing to obtain an arena arrangement with his club’s owner.

When the Stars originally arrived in Texas, they had a mediocre record before going on to win five straight division championships from 1996-97 to 2000-01 after dropping the “North” from their moniker. To win the franchise’s first Stanley Cup, the Stars beat the Buffalo Sabres in six games in the 1998–99 Stanley Cup final, which was captained by franchise legend and all-time leading scorer Mike Modano and goaltender Ed Belfour.

The next year, the Stars made it all the way to the Stanley Cup Finals before falling to the New Jersey Devils. When the team didn’t make it to postseason play in 2001–02, it rebounded to make it to the playoffs in each of the following three seasons between 2002–03 and 2007–08. (a loss to the eventual champion Detroit Red Wings).

During the 2011–12 season, the Stars went four years without making the playoffs, a record for the team. Since then, Dallas has made it back to the postseason, where they lost in the first round. St. Louis Blues beat the Dallas Stars in a seven-game second-round playoff series, despite the team’s best record in the Western Conference during the 2015–16 season.

After a disappointing season in which the Stars finished fifth in the division in 2016–17, the team was forced to make an off-season coaching change. Despite a first-round upset, Dallas was knocked out of the playoffs in the second round of the 2018–19 season. This year, the Dallas Stars made it to the playoffs for the second time in three seasons and won the Western Conference Championship.

Career

On the banks of the Mississippi River in 1841, John Neely Bryan, a lawyer, and trader from Tennessee erected the first cabin in the area. In 1844, a townsite was established to accommodate the influx of new inhabitants.

The community’s name is a mystery, but it is most likely called after Joseph Dallas, an early pioneer, or George Mifflin Dallas, a vice president of the United States, who served from 1845 to 1949. Later, French artisans from La Réunion came to supplement its early population of Swiss and German immigrants. People of African descent flooded into the area following the Civil War.

The introduction of railroads in the 1870s sparked a boom in commercial activity. Neiman-Marcus, a retailer with global renown, is one of many in the city that serve the American Southwest wholesale market. East Dallas and Oak Cliff were incorporated into the city in 1889 and 1903, respectively, resulting in a significant increase in its population.

Texas black-clay fields provided grain, leather, and cotton for the city’s early growth and later oil, insurance, and other industries. The Dallas Cotton Exchange was established in 1907 and was one of the world’s largest cotton marketplaces in the early decades of the twentieth century.

In addition, the city was one of the leading manufacturers of cotton-ginning equipment in the country. Additionally, Dallas was a hub for food processing and textile and leather product manufacturing in the early 20th century, and a branch of the Federal Reserve System was created there. Immigrants from Mexico bolstered the demographic increase of the country.

While the Depression-era Dallas Central Centennial Exposition (1936) was a benefit to the city’s economy, one of the country’s earliest retail malls, Highland Park, opened in 1931 as part of the state’s official commemoration of Texas’ centennial.

A series of big aircraft-manufacturing plants were created in the area following World War II, resulting in the city’s rapid growth. In the following years, electronic and car assembly plants were also established. After President John F. Kennedy’s assassination in Dallas on November 22, 1963, the city was propelled into the international spotlight.

As a result of the opening of Dallas–Fort Worth International Airport in 1974, the area has become a popular location for corporate headquarters. At its pinnacle in the early 80s, but by the end of that year it had collapsed, and its economic impact on the country was greatly diminished. The first elected female mayor was Annette Strauss in 1987, and the first elected black mayor Ron Kirk was elected in 1995.

Known for its high concentration of restaurants and retail centers, Dallas has become a cosmopolitan metropolis in recent years. New York City’s night skyline is enhanced by skyscrapers such as Bank of America Plaza (1985) and Reunion Tower (1978). Due to the prevalence of single-family dwellings, the population density is exceptionally low for a major metropolitan area (about two-thirds of all dwelling units). Only a small percentage of the city’s population is of European heritage.

More than one-third of the population is Hispanic, and about one-quarter is African American. The ranch where the show was filmed is now a tourist attraction and convention complex in Dallas, which made it famous in pop culture as the setting for the namesake television drama series (originally broadcast 1978–91).

The modern economy of Dallas is well-diversified. The Dallas Market Center (1957), one of the world’s largest wholesale merchandise complexes, is located in the city. While it’s not a military facility itself, it is home to the headquarters of the U.S. Army and Air Force Exchange Service (AFES). The economy’s backbone is comprised of wholesale and retail trade, as well as services (especially commercial, financial, and health).

More than 6,000 businesses have their corporate offices in Dallas, which is the largest financial and commerce center in the Southwest. Additionally, the city is a major convention center and hub for air travel. The American Heart Association, Texas A&M College of Dentistry, and the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas are all located in Dallas (1943).

Telecommunications and high-tech manufacturing and service industries are concentrated in Dallas. Producing software, computer services, and computer hardware (including semiconductors) are among the most sought-after technological specialties. Publishing, printing, and advertising are all key aspects of the food processing industry. The city is still known as a regional fashion and women’s apparel center, despite a decline in clothing manufacturing.

Although the 1990s saw a dramatic decline in aerospace production, the industry is still a major source of economic activity today. Oil and gas extraction still maintains a significant presence in Dallas, as do numerous drilling-equipment supply companies and geophysical exploration enterprises. A similar loss has occurred in the city’s importance to cotton.
