Terrence Malick Wiki/Bio

T. Terrence Malick was a secretive and intermittent American director whose films were recognized for their poetic beauty. He was born on November 30, 1943, in Ottawa, Illinois, the U.S.A. as Terrence Frederick Malick.

Malick was up in Texas and Oklahoma before attending Harvard University in 1965, where he earned a degree in philosophy. While at Oxford, he was awarded a Rhodes Scholarship at Magdalen College but dropped out before finishing his thesis. His decision was to return to the US, where he worked as a freelance journalist for magazines including Life and The New Yorker and temporarily taught philosophy at MIT.

The essay “Vom Wesen des Grundies” (“The Essence of Reasons”), written by German philosopher Martin Heidegger, was translated by him for a bilingual edition of the text released in 1969. This was Malick’s second year at AFI, this time earning an M.F.A. from the then-new Center for Advanced Film Studies (now the AFI Conservatory).

In 1971, Malick began his career in Hollywood as an uncredited writer for Jack Nicholson’s film Drive, He Said. Martin Sheen played a hoodlum who persuades a little girl (Sissy Spacek) to run away with him, and they go on an unrelenting spree of heinous crimes together in his directorial debut, Badlands (1973).

Known for its stunning photography and eerie tone, the film (one of many based on the real-life murder spree committed by Charles Starkweather and Caril Ann Fugate in 1957–58) would go on to influence Malick’s use of voice-over in future works. With his second film, Days of Heaven (1978), Malick explored the lives of day laborers in early 20th-century Texas. The film received acclaim and earned Malick the Cannes Film Festival’s Best Director prize.

However, moviegoers would have to wait another two decades to see another Terrence Malick film. It relied on a large ensemble cast to provide an existential reflection on war in The Thin Red Line (1998), based on James Jones’s novel about the World War II Battle of Guadalcanal.

In spite of the fact that Malick was nominated for both best-adapted screenplay and best director at the Academy Awards, his film was eclipsed by Steven Spielberg’s Saving Private Ryan, another World War II drama.

Before Terrence Malick’s The New World (2005) could be seen in theatres, several more years had to pass. Christian Bale and Colin Farrell appeared in the historical drama about the establishment of Jamestown, which received praise for its accuracy.

His second film, The Tree of Life (2011) was an impressionistic exploration of humanity’s role in the cosmos as seen through the eyes of a dysfunctional family in 1950s Texas. Malick was nominated for an Oscar for best director for this film, which starred Brad Pitt and Sean Penn and won the Palme d’Or at Cannes.

Career

As he approached seventy, he appeared to increase his output with the romantic melodrama To the Wonder as his next project (2012). Despite the fact that this was Malick’s first picture set in the present day, the meandering, atmospheric aesthetic matched that of his prior work. In a sequence of episodes titled after tarot cards, Knight of Cups (2015) followed the bizarre wanderings and interactions of a dissipated film industry worker (Christian Bale).

In 2017, Malick released Song to Song, a whirlwind love story centered around a trio of Austin-based musicians and a powerful music producer. A Hidden Life (2019) is a dramatization of the life of Austrian farmer Franz Jägerstätter, a conscientious objector who refused to swear allegiance to Hitler’s regime.

Harvard University is the country’s first and most prestigious school of higher study, having opened its doors in 1636. Ivy League is a term used to describe a prestigious university. A few miles west of downtown Boston, in Cambridge, Massachusetts, is where the majority of the university’s students and faculty call home. There are around 23,000 students enrolled at Harvard as a whole.

Harvard’s history dates back to 1636 when a college was founded in New Towne and renamed Cambridge after the English university where some of the colony’s most prominent citizens had studied. A “college yard” and one teacher were all that was needed to start classes in the summer of 1638. Harvard was given its name by a Puritan clergyman, John Harvard, who bequeathed his library and part of his fortune to the school.

Harvard was founded with the support of a local church, despite the fact that it was not technically linked with any religious organization at the time. From clerical and then political domination over its first two centuries, the institution was gradually freed, until in 1865 university graduates began electing members of the governing body. While serving as Harvard’s president from 1869 to 1909, Charles W. Eliot turned the university into an important national institution.

Harvard’s former students and faculty have had a significant impact on the intellectual and political growth of the United States. Harvard had educated seven U.S. presidents by the end of the first decade of the twenty-first century: John Adams, John Quincy Adams, Rutherford B. Hayes, Theodore Roosevelt, Franklin D. Roosevelt, John F. Kennedy, and Barack Obama, as well as a number of justices, cabinet officers, and Congressional officials.

Ralph Waldo Emerson and Oliver Wendell Holmes are just a few of the famous Harvard alums who have penned notable works of literature, along with Henry David Thoreau and James Russell Lowell. Other notable Harvard alums include T.S. Eliot, John Dos Passos, and Henry James. These individuals, along with astronomer Benjamin Peirce and chemist Wolcott Gibbs who graduated or taught at Harvard, are among the most prominent intellectuals to have come out of the Ivy League school. In the 1870s, William James of Harvard University introduced the experimental study of psychology to the United States.
