Don Mattingly Wiki/Bio

Former professional baseball first baseman Donald Arthur Mattingly (born April 20, 1961) is the manager of the Miami Marlins and former first baseman for the New York Yankees. Known as “The Hit Man” and “Donnie Baseball,” he played for the New York Yankees for 14 years before managing the Los Angeles Dodgers for five years after his playing days were over.

Mattingly attended Evansville, Indiana’s Reitz Memorial High School before being drafted by the New York Yankees as an amateur free agent. When Mattingly made his Major League Baseball debut in 1982 with the New York Yankees after three seasons in the minors, he quickly established himself as the team’s starting first baseman. During his career, Mattingly was selected to six All-Star games for the American League (AL). Nine American League Gold Glove Awards, three Silver Slugger Awards, the 1984 AL Batting Title, and the 1985 AL Most Valuable Player went to him, a record for a first baseman in the league. From 1991 to 1995, Mattingly captained the New York Yankees as a player before retiring. Later on, the Yankees took down Mattingly’s number 23 from their uniforms. Without a World Series championship under his belt, Mattingly is the sole former Yankee to have his number retired.

In 2004, he returned to the Yankees as manager Joe Torre’s assistant coach. In 2008, he followed Torre to the Los Angeles Dodgers, where he became manager in 2011. After the 2015 season, the Dodgers and Mattingly parted ways, and he was hired as manager of the Miami Marlins. Mattingly has a left and right hand. As a first baseman, he pitched in Little League Baseball for Evansville, Indiana’s 1973 Great Scot Little League championship team, which was coached by Pete Studer and Earl Hobbs. He also pitched in Little League Baseball as a right-handed and left-handed pitcher. Mattingly was a second baseman for Funkhouser Post #8 in American Legion baseball, where he threw right-handed.

Mattingly was a student at Evansville’s Reitz Memorial High School. When Mattingly was a member of the school baseball team, the Tigers, he led the team to 59 straight victories in 1978–79, a state record. It was the Tigers who took home the title in 1978 and then the runner-up trophy in the following year (1979). In 1979, Mattingly was the recipient of the L.V. Phillips Mental Attitude Award. For the years 1978 and 1979, he was named to the All-City, All-Southern Indiana Athletic Conference, and All-State teams. When he was in high school, the Tigers had a 94–9–1 win-loss record with a.463 batting average because Mattingly played four years. He still holds the hits (152), doubles (29), triples (25), RBIs (140), and runs scored (152) records at the Reitz Memorial (99). It’s also a state record for the most triples made by a single player in Indiana. He’s a multi-sport athlete who was also named to the SIAC’s prestigious ‘All-Conference’ team.

Mattingly accepted an athletic scholarship to play baseball for the Indiana State Sycamores after high school. After Bill informed MLB teams of his son’s decision, they were relieved to know that he would not sign a professional contract with any of the teams. Mattingly was selected by the New York Yankees in the 19th round of the 1979 MLB draught, after which he was released. Instead of going to college, he signed with the Yankees, where he received a $23,000 signing bonus. In 1979, Mattingly signed with the Oneonta Yankees of the Class A-Short Season New York–Penn League and began his professional baseball career. He wanted to bat.500 for Oneonta, but his batting average of.349, which never fell below.340, disappointed him. In 1980, he hit.358 and in 1981, he hit.316. There was some concern about Mattingly’s lack of speed and power, despite his hitting prowess. Greensboro Hornets Class A South Atlantic League manager Bob Schaefer said the team considered moving Mattingly to second base, where he could throw right-handed.

By the time he reached the majors, Mattingly had slashed.325 with the Columbus Clippers of the Class AAA International League. Don Mattingly, a former all-star baseball player for the New York Yankees, was born on April 20, 1961, in Evansville, Indiana. His nine Gold Glove Awards rank him second all-time among first basemen. His future induction into the Baseball Hall of Fame is widely expected when he becomes eligible. He was a nine-time American League All-Star first baseman (1985-1989 and 1991-1994) and the 1985 World Series MVP. He also won nine American League Gold Gloves. Back injuries ended his professional career early. A member of the New York Yankees’ 1994 American League Eastern Division champion squad.

A six-time member of the American League All-Star team (1984-1989). In 1984, 1986, and 1987, he was the American League MVP’s runner-up twice. New York Yankees first baseman (1982-1995). Originally signed as an amateur free agent by the New York Yankees in the 19th round of the 1979 MLB draught. Career highlights include hitting 442 doubles, good for 78th all-time, and 96 sac flies (30th All-Time). Slugging percentage (.573), hits (238), total bases (388), doubles (53) and extra-base hits (86) were all tops in the American League in 1986 for the former New York Yankees outfielder. In 1985, he was the American League’s top hitter in all five major offensive categories (total bases, doubles, RBI, extra-base hits, and sacrifice flies).

In 1984, he was the best hitter in the American League, batting.343 with 207 hits and 44 doubles. There are three children: Taylor Patrick (b. March 17, 1985) and Preston Michael (b. August 28, 1987). (b. 23 July 1991) On the 8th of September of 1982, he made his major-league debut. This individual has no connection to Larry Bird in any way. Both Larry Bird and his wife have Indiana roots, so the speculation that Larry is his brother-in-law arose naturally. Mattingly doesn’t have a sibling or a sibling relationship.

Career

On September 8, 1982, Mattingly made his Major League debut as a defensive replacement for the Baltimore Orioles in the ninth inning. Against the Milwaukee Brewers on September 11, he got one at-bat and popped out to the third base. On October 1st, against the Boston Red Sox, he singled to right field off of Steve Crawford for his first Major League hit. That season, he managed just two hits in twelve at-bats.

Mattingly was a part-time first baseman and outfielder during his rookie season in 1983. In 279 plate appearances, he batted just.283. On June 24, he went yard against the Red Sox’s John Tudor for his first career home run.

In 1984, Mattingly was promoted to the Yankees’ active roster and started at first base on a regular basis. At the time, his batting average was.339, which made him eligible for the 1984 All-Star Game as a reserve. Mattingly and teammate Dave Winfield were neck-and-neck for the American League batting title going into the final game of the season, with Mattingly trailing Winfield by.002 runs. On the season’s final day. In addition to Mattingly’s 4-for-5 performance, Winfield went 1-for-4. Mattingly had a batting average of.343, while Winfield had a.340 mark to finish second. Mattingly had the most hits in the league, as well, with 207.

He also had 23 home runs and 44 doubles, which was the most in the league. The slugging percentage was second (.537), at-bats per strikeout were 18.3, total bases were 424, RBIs were 110, sacrifice flies were 6 and on-base percentage was 10 for him (.381). Mattingly went on to have an outstanding 1985 season, winning the American League’s MVP award for the second time in his career. The left-handed major league hitter with the most RBIs in a season since Ted Williams drove in 159 in 1949 hit.324 (3rd in the league) with 35 home runs (4th), 48 doubles (1st), and 145 RBIs (1st). His total of 21 RBIs was the most by an American Leaguer since Al Rosen led the league in that category in 1953 with 24. This year, the AL leader in sacrifice flies (15), total bases (370), and extra-base hits (86) was also the league’s second-best hitter (211), third-best slugger (.567), and fourth-best in intentional walks (13) and at-bats per strikeout (13.9) (18.6). With two outs and a runner in scoring position, he had a batting average of.354.

In 1985, Mattingly won his first of nine Gold Glove Awards for his defensive play. Even though he was a left-handed thrower, he was assigned to play second base and third base early in his career because the Yankees saw him as such a valuable defensive asset. During the 1983 resumption of the George Brett “Pine Tar Incident” game, Mattingly played a third of an inning as a left-handed throwing second baseman. During a five-game series against the Seattle Mariners in 1986, he also appeared in three games as a left-handed throwing third baseman with the team.

Mattingly had a similar season in 1986, leading the league with 238 hits, 53 doubles, and breaking the single-season franchise records set by Earle Combs in 1927 (231 hits) and Lou Gehrig in 1931 (52 doubles). His.573 slugging percentage was good for 388 total bases and 388 runs batted in. He had a batting average of.352, 31 home runs, and 113 RBIs (sixth in the league) (third). Pitcher Roger Clemens, who won the Cy Young Award the same year as the MVP award, beat him in the voting for the American League MVP. Mattingly was the last Major Leaguer to play third base with a left-handed throwing hand.

In 1993, Seattle’s Ken Griffey, Jr. tied the record. At the time, Mattingly held the record for the most consecutive games with an extra-base hit (10). During this streak, Mattingly hit a record-breaking 10 home runs (Long & Griffey had eight during their streaks). This was Mattingly’s final season in the majors and he set the record for most home runs in a season with six, which was later matched by Travis Hafner in 2006 (both during his July home run streak). The two grand slams Mattingly won in 1987 were his only major championships. Mattingly allegedly hurt his back in June 1987 while playing sex with pitcher Bob Shirley in the clubhouse, but both men denied this. Although his average was down, he still managed to rack up 30 home runs and 115 RBIs to finish the season, which was his fourth straight season with at least 110 RBIs. Mattingly had a three-year span in which he hit 96 home runs while striking out just 114 times.

In 1988, Mattingly hit 18 home runs and drove in 88 runs, but his batting average of.311 kept him in the top ten of the league. In 1989, he bounced back with 113 RBIs but a.303 batting average. On April 30, 1988, Mattingly became the 12th Yankee to score five runs in a game when he went 5-for-5.

During the 1990 season, Mattingly’s back problems resurfaced, and he was forced to miss time due to injury. He only returned late in the season and struggled to put up any kind of production for the Red Sox. When his.256 average, five home runs, and 42 RBIs in nearly 400 at-bats were released, many people were taken aback. Mattingly underwent a lot of therapy during the offseason, but his power never returned to its pre-injury level. Despite hitting.290 on average over his final five seasons, he evolved into a slap hitter who only hit 53 home runs. However, despite Mattingly’s outstanding defensive play, he was often unable to take the field due to injury.
