Lee Grant is a well-known theatre, television, and film actress from the United States. She began her career in show business at an early age and has studied at several famous institutions, including the American Ballet Theatre and the Neighborhood Playhouse School of Theatre. She quickly established herself as a Broadway and off-Broadway actress, gaining critical acclaim for her performance as a shoplifter in the play “Detective Story.” She was cast in the film adaptation of the same after becoming famous overnight in this part, making her presence felt and doing an exceptional job in her debut onscreen appearance.

Her career, however, took a turn for the worse after she was banned for 12 years from radio, cinema, and most television employment owing to her political opinions. She appeared on television on occasion during this time, as well as in a number of supporting roles in theatre. She appeared in a number of notable films over her career, including ‘In the Heat of the Night,’ ‘Judd, for the Defense,’ ‘The Landlord,’ ‘Voyage of the Damned,’ and ‘Shampoo,’ for which she received a number of nominations and an Academy Award. The House Committee on Un-American Activities blacklisted her from radio, cinema, and most television work from 1952 through 1964 because she refused to testify against her husband. As a result, she squandered her peak years. She was taken off the blacklist in 1964. She worked irregularly in the theatre throughout the time she was blacklisted.

From 1965 to 1966, she starred in the television series “Peyton Palace,” which gave her her big break. For the part, she was cast as ‘Stella Chernak,’ and she featured in a total of 71 episodes during this time. Her effort also earned her a coveted award.

In 1968, she played the wife of a US envoy who was working behind the scenes to embarrass a foreign diplomat in an episode of “Mission Impossible.” She appeared in the films ‘The Big Bounce’ and ‘Marooned’ the following year.
