He had an incredible career chart with one win at both the FIFA World Cup (1998) and Euro (2000) for France. During his time as a player, he was France’s leading player. Zidane has won numerous awards and honours for his excellence including the ‘FIFA World Player of the Year’ and ‘Ballon D’Or.’ He was awarded the FIFA World Cup Golden Ball 2006 for his excellent contribution to the game on his retirement.

Zinedine Zidane was born in Smaïl and Malika on 23 June 1972, in Marseille, France. He has four older brothers and sisters. His family, of Algerian descent from the Kabyle Berber family, lived in the northern suburb of La Castellane in Marseille.

His father was by profession a warehousekeeper, but his mother was a home-builder. In contrast to neighbourhood people, the Zidane family were a respected group and lived a relatively comfortable life unlike others who were unemployed and involved in high crime.

Young Zidane was introduced to a five-year-old football game. Together with the children from the neighbourhood he played a game at Tartane Place, the main square of the complex.

In his early days, Olympiques like Blaz Sliskovic, Enzo Francescoli and Jean-Pierre Papin, his idols, influenced Zidane.

Zidane got his player licence at the age of ten for a local club junior team from La Castellane. His term at the club was short, moving after about a year and a half to ‘SO Septemes-les-Vallons.’

Zidane’s ‘Septems’ alliance lasted two years and a half and was chosen for three days of training at the ‘CREPS’ in Aix-en-Provence. His excellent ball and technique brought him to the notice of Jean Varraud, ‘AS Cannes’ scout who recommended him to the training center’s director.

With the intention of staying for six weeks, Zidane finally spent four years in Cannes. He spent his first few months with other trainees in the dormitory and then stayed with Jean-Claude Elineau, director of ‘Cannes’ and his family. Zidane found balance while spending time with the Elineau family. Zidane received his junior team licence from the local club from La Castellane at the age of ten. Career

Zidane’s ‘Septeme’ alliance lasted for two years and a half, after which he was selected to participate in a three-day camp at the CREPS in Aix-en-Provence. His excellent ability with ball and technique brought him to the notice of ‘AS Cannes’ scout Jean Varraud who recommended him to the club’s head of the training centre.

He spent his first few months with other trainees in the dormitory and then stayed with Jean-Claude Elineau, director of ‘Cannes’ and his family. Zidane found balance while spending time with the Elineau family. Zidane’s professional debut in League 1 match against ‘Nantes’ was for ‘Cannes’ on 18 May 1989.In 1991, he scored his first goal for ‘Nantes’ with a 2-1 victory for his team.

Zidane performed for ‘Girondins de Bordeaux’ between 1992 and 1993. Its performance was first class and the club won the ‘Intertoto Cup’ in 1995. The club finished second in the ‘UEFA Cup’ in 1995-96.

On the field, Zidane and Bixente Lizarazu and Christophe Dugarry combined the midfield to form a trade mark for ‘Bordeaux’ and the French National Team in 1998.

In 1996, Zidane moved for an amazing £3.2 million to ‘UEFA Champions League’ winner ‘Juventus.’ ‘Juventus’ won the 1996-97 ‘Series A’ not only, but also brought home the ‘Intercontinental Cup.’ ‘Juventus’ lost the ‘UEFA Champions League’ final of 1997 to ‘Borussia Dortmund,’ because Paul Lambert denied Zidane’s skills.

The year 1998 was a success for Zidane, who recorded seven goals in 32 matches. His club not only won the ‘Serie A’ from 1997 to 1998, but also kept the ‘Scudetto.’ ‘Juventus’ finished for the third time for the ‘UEFA Champions League,’ but lost to ‘Real Madrid.’

For a then world record fee of 150 billion Italian lire, Zidane joined “Real Madrid” in 2001. The investment was worthwhile because Zidane helped ‘Real Madrid’ to win convincingly in his four-year contract. In Madrid’s 2-1 win against ‘Bayer Leverkusen’ in the 2002 ‘UEFA Champions League’ final he scored the famous winning goal, a volleyball hit with his weaker foot.

In the following seasons, Zidane won ‘League’ for ‘Real Madrid’ between 2002 and 2003. He was subsequently awarded numerous awards for his excellent performance.

Although Zidane was unable to win any trophies for “Real Madrid,” his personal statistics were still good during his final season in the club. In a 4–2 win in January 2006, he scored his first hat-trick against ‘Sevilla FC,’ and the second-highest goal scorer in the season for ‘Real Madrid.’

Zidane’s last home match for the club was on May 7, 2006 when he scored against ‘Villarreal CF’ in a three-to-three draw.

In a friendly match against Czech Republic, Zidane’s first stint on the world stage came as a substitute. Although he was used as a replacement, his entry saved the team twice, helping France to achieve a 2–2 draw.

Eric Cantona’s long suspension was a boon for Zidane when he succeeded in taking over the position of playing maker in 1995. France was eliminated from the Euro 96 semi-finals in penalty shootings the following year after the match was over with no team scoring a goal.

The first appearance of Zidane at the FIFA World Cup took place in 1998. He showed promise and character throughout the tournament. In every game he played, he was excellent but had a hard time scoring a goal. France moved the charts up and defeated all its opponents to the semifinals, where Croatia was 2-1 in the lead. France was supposed to play the ‘FIFA World Cup’ final in 1998 against defending champions Brazil, a team that has been recognised as the cup’s favourite. Zidane, who did not score a goal in “World Cup,” went on to score two goals, both in the lead, putting France on top of her 2-0 scorecard in the first half. France won the game and its first ever ‘World Cup’ at the end of the second half. Zidane was crowned as the national hero instantly.

But the reigning world and European champions had a big chance at the 2002 FIFA World Cup as their most trusted and capable player Zidane sustained thigh injuries. France lost its first two games without him on the side. Although Zidane was unfit, he was brought back to the third game. His medical condition however prevented him from playing his best, adding to the problems of the defending champions that were eliminated without scoring a single goal in the group stage.

‘Euro 2004’ was reportedly the last tournament of Zidane to retire afterwards. Before losing to Greece in the quarter-finals, France won their group over England and Switzerland.

Zidane’s retirement occurred at a time when other veteran French players also withdrew. France has struggled to qualify for the 2006 ‘World Cup’ without some of its major players. Zidane made a comeback at the request of then coach Raymond Domenech and was reinstated immediately as the team’s captain.

France showed spark and character under Zidane’s captaincy. The team defeated their opponents to reach Brazil in the quarter-finals. Then Brazil was defeated by France 1-0.

The penalty kick of Zidane proved decisive in the semifinals, with France defeating Portugal to reach the Italian finals. The final of the FIFA World Cup 2006 was his last match. Just minutes after the start of the game, Zidane gave France the upper hand, scoring a goal, taking full advantage of a penalty kick. A heated argument followed by a headbutt to get Zidane a red card to knock Marco Materazzi down. He was not allowed to take part in the 5–3 penalty shootings won by Italy. He’s regularly played for the ‘Real Madrid Veterans’ team since his retirement. He made several futsal appearances as well.

Zidane was appointed President Florentino Perez’s adviser to ‘Real Madrid’ in 2009. Together with General Manager Jorge Valdano and Sports Manager Miguel Pardeza Zidane served as the club’s key decision-maker.

In 2010, he served as Qatar’s highly respected ambassador for the 2022 ‘World Cup.’ In 2010, after requesting the coach to cooperate more closely with the team, Zidane was also a special advisor for ‘Real Madrid.’ The following year he was appointed sports director of the club.

In 2012, Zidane began coaching the Youth Academy of the club, the first step to take the shots from the sides of the field. The same year he played against ‘Manchester United,’ the ‘All Stars Match,’ which won ‘Real Madrid’ 3-2.
