Rudolf “Rudi” Völler (born on 13 April 1960), surnamed “Tante Käthe,” is a former German professional soccer player and former German team manager. He won the FIFA World Cup as a player in 1990. In the 1986 FIFA World Cup Final versus Argentina, he also achieved an equalising goal of 2–2 in the 81st minute. The target was in vain, 3-2 won by Argentina.Völler has the distinction, together with Mário Zagallo, Franz Beckenbauer and Didier Deschamps, of being a player (1986 and 1990) and manager of the World Cup final (2002).

Völler began his career with Hanau in 1860, then joined the Werder Bremen Bundesliga club in 1982, winning his first West Germany cap that year. After a successful season in which he was the top scorer of the Bundesliga, the striker became interested in foreign clubs and he went to Roma in 1987 where he was the main pillar of a team which earned the nickname “Er tedesco” and also “El tedesco volante” (“the flying German”).

He won the Coppa Italia in 1991 and was several times the club’s top scorer. Völler’s national team capped 90 time, scoring 47 goals, including eight final rounds of the World Cup.  He scored three times, one for a 4-1 win over Yugoslavia, and then twice for a 5-1 win against the United Arab Emirates. After a spitting incident, Völler and Dutch player Frank Rijkaard were sent off the field during the second-round match against the Netherlands. Völler returned to Germany to play the stars both in the semi-final and in the final, which Germany won by 1-0.

The bad event during the second round with Holland began when Rijkaard was booked in Völler for a bad tackle. As Rijkaard took the free kick, he spat in the hair of Völler. Völler complained to the arbitrator and was also booked. Völler dived from the free kick to avoid a collision with Hans van Breukelen, but he looked as if he was going for a penalty. Van Breukelen was angry, but Rijkaard again twisted his ear and stamped his foot against Völler.

Career

Both Rijkaard and Völler were dispatched, but Rijkaard spat in Völler’s hair again, leaving the pitch, rumoured that he repeated it on the touchline. Later Rijkaard said it was his fault: “I was wrong that day. No insult. No insult. I’ve always respected Rudi Völler a lot. But when I saw that red card, I went berserk. After the match, I spoke to him and I apologised. I’m very glad he accepted it. Now I don’t have a bad feeling about him. We even posed together for a very funny ad, years later.” (Rijkaard had problems with his family at this time).

In a group match against Romania, Völler also played in EUR 84, and the Germans won 2-1, but in the next match a 90th minute defeat from Spain saw West Germany eliminated if all it needed was a draw.

At the 1986 World Cup, Völler scored the West German equaliser in the pool stage with a 2-1 win over Scotland. He scored the last minute goal against France in the half-final, sealing a 2-0 win and his 80th minute goal 2–2 against Argentina in the final. West Germany was down 2-0, but lost 3-2 in the game. After Dick Nanninga in 1978 and Alessandro Altobelli in 1982, Völler became the third and last player to score as a substitut for the World Cup Finals.

West Germany hosted the Euro 88 and Völler won two-and-a-half times over Spain, but the hosts lost to eventual Holland winners in the half-finals.He was selected again for Euro 92 but sent home in the opening game with CIS when he suffered an injury.

At the 1994 Völler World Cup, Jürgen Klinsmann and Karl-Heinz Riedle, five of them scored, were excluded from the starting line for all three group games. He did only one sub-show in the group phases. He started with Belgium in the second round, scoring twice in a 3–2 win. Played for Germany in 90 internationals (1982-1994) with 47 goals. He was a team player at the 1986, 1990 and 1994 FIFA World Cup.

He played for 1860 Munich (1980-82), Werder Bremen (1982-87), AS Roma ( 1987-1992), Olympique Marseille (1992-1994) and Bayer Leverkusen during his professional career as a clubist (1994-1996).Winner of the FIFA World Cup (1990).
