Benét, torn apart by Tami’s death emotionally, fell into a two-year depression. Only his daughter, still a baby at the time, prevented him completely from giving up. “Truly it was the hardest thing that I’ve ever experienced,” Benét admitted in an interview in Independent with Chris Wells. “It didn’t hurt that much that losing my father, as traumatic as that was. At least when we knew he was dying… all of us—my mother, two sisters, my brother—to say goodbye. Tami and I were not together at the time she died — I just saw India every weekend — but feelings of guilt, remorse, sorrow, depression have taken over. When I came home from work, Hearing India called my name at the end of the day it felt like all I had to hang on.”

Benét published his debut album, True to Myself, in 1996, with his enthusiasm for music restored. Co-produced with Nash and Posey, the album drew on the infant influences of soul musicians such as Al Green, Sly Stone and Stevie Wonder from the beginning of the 1970s. However, Benét succeeded in combining his own contemporary art with the forms borrowed from his contemporary artists, earning him critical recognition for his commitment to R&B. In addition, while most R&B artists adhere to a particular music style, Benét also tries to incorporate aspects of other genres into his songs. With my record, I could do something a bit rocky in one track, I could make something like Beatleish in another track, and I could do something gospel/bluesy in one track, sometimes it’s kind of hard for people to take,” Benét told Philadelphia Tribune. The first single, “Spiritual Thang,” became a top ten hit of the R&B charts and the single “Let’s Stay Together” featured in the movie A Thin Line Between Love and Hate from Martin Lawrence. The album also featured a song on his late friend, “While You Were Here,” describing their relationship aspects that were taken for granted.
Despite the success of Benét’s first single, his first effort lacked record sales support. Some of the lower than expected figures were accused by the young singer of not fitting his music with the typical urban radio format. “Urban radio has turned this into a thing that sounds like so many songs,” Benét said in Philadelphia Tribune. “If you deviate from it, it is very difficult to accept it. If you put any other musical influence in your particular atmosphere, you’re not black enough or you’re selling it out. I think the view of music is a very narrow one, urban audiences have become so used to a certain sort of thing… All of them do that vocally, the same kick sound, the same snare, something that bends creativity, throws in a few chord progressions there and it’s kind of hard to get embraced.” Nonetheless the determined singer forged an international tour to promote True to Myself, even without the support of radio play, and pulled fans into his music wherever they went.
Moreover, Warner Brothers saw a marked increase in record sales over the first release of Benét. Benét himself felt A Day In Life showed that he had matured and he took the time to get the right body of work. This album, which is based more on classic R&B, was largely inspired by the real life experiences of Benét. “I keep a newspaper,” he said, as quoted from the website of Warner Brothers. “The title of the album came from the re-reading of my diary. As a songwriter, I just opened myself to anything from my heart.”
Although Benét strives to gain recognition for his music, he still cares for his daughter. He continues to live in Milwaukee, therefore, so that his mom can help him take care of India so that he can record and tour.
