In the early 1970s, Donna Fargo was for several reasons an atypical country star. One of the few women Country Singers to create her own material and one of the few Country Singers of all kinds to be widely known on the pop chart, which she did with “The Happiest Girl in the Whole U.S.A.” and “Funny Face” in 1972 (no. 11) (number five).

She never again made the Top 40 pop but placed more than a dozen individuals in the Top Ten Country in the 1970s, most of them written by herself. As an artist, she was in the mainstream squarely, offering beautiful, sweet-producing homily homilies to romance, home and America. After multiple sclerosis, she faded in 1979, although she continued to write and act.

Songwriter/country singer Donna Fargo was born in Mount Airy, North Carolina, in Yvonne Vaughan on November 10, 1945. In her early teens, Donna started singing. She studied at both High Point College and Southern California University. After completing his undergraduate degree Fargo began working in Covina, California as a high school teacher and finally became head of the English department.


She met her future husband and California manager Stan Silver; she married in 1968. Fargo started performing in different places in California at first. Donna travelled to Phoenix, Arizona, in 1966, assumed Donna Fargo’s stage name, and wrote her first single. Ray Price was her first significant theatrical show. In 1969, Fargo received the Academy of Country music awards for the Top New Female Vocalist. With 1972, Donna had her first big country success in the bouncy “The Happiest Girl in the Whole U.S.A.’s chart #1 song and it soared to #11 on the pop billboard chart.

Fargo was later awarded a Grammy Award for Best Country Vocal Play for “The Happiest Girl in the Whole USA.” by the Academy of Country Music Awards, and has been named Top Female Vocalist. The lovely follow-up song “Funny Face” has always improved: it was another #1 country smash and the Top 5 was cracked on the pop charts of the Billboard. Donna has two additional singles “Superman” and “You Were Always There” with country hits No. 1. With “You can’t be a Beacon If your Light don’t shine,” she achieved further #1 country songs and “That was yesterday.” Other songs like “Little Girl Gone,” “I’ll Try a Little Bit Harder,” “It Feel Good,” “Mr Doodles,” “Mockingbird Hill,” “Daddy” are some of Fargo’s other country’s 1970s success.

In the late 70’s, she presented her own short-lived TV series. In 1978, Donna was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, and in 1979 she took time off to heal. Although her fame slightly decreased in the 1980’s, during that particular decade, Fargo maintained recording albums and singles. She scored a top 30 country success with “Me and You” and “Members Only,” a duet with Billy Joe Royal which reached #23 in 1987. Apart from music, Donna has her own successful greeting cards and has published several poetry volumes. She still tours and performs in concert both in the USA and elsewhere. The CD single “We Can Do Better in America” was released by Donna Fargo in 2008.


Career

During the day she taught at Northview High School in Colvina, California; at night, she played as Donna Fargo in local night clubs.
In 1972, her debut song, “The Happiest Girl in the Wholesale U.S.A.” achieved No. 1 on the country chart of Billboard magazine. The million-selling song was also a significant hit in the Hot 100 chart of Billboard.

Other successes No. 1 includes “Funny Face” and “Superman” and “You Were Ever There (both 1973), “You Can’t Be A Beacon (if Your Light Don’t Shine)” and “You Were Yesterday,” “If Your Light Don’t Shine” (1974). (1977). In 1978, another No. 1 success with “Do I Love You (Yes at Every Way)” was just missed.

 

Fargo tried to sing the lyrics when he recorded “That Was Yesterday,” then to recite parts and sing others. She finally recited all the lines, leading to a rare country hit of recitation No. 1.He was the fifth most successful country performer in the seventies.
