Lykke Li Wiki/Bio

In exploring love and grief, Swedish indie pop musician Lykke Li recreated the sounds of girls’ pop group ’50s-1960s for the 21st century with her 2008 breakthrough, Youth Novels. She matured on the Beat-driven Wounded Rhyme(2011) with candid lyrics and often delicate vocals, and I never learned (2014). Following the three albums — all produced with Björn Yttling — Li has moved in a new path, taking the sounds of the late 2010 trends with pop-makers who are so sadly sexy (2018).

Born in Ystad, Sweden, Li Lykke Timotej Zachrisson grew up in the music family – her father is a Dag Vag member – with a multi-cultural background, her family often living and travelling through Europe, Africa and Asia. After a few crucial months as a teenager in Brooklyn, she returned to the city to make her debut.

Career

While she caught the attention of indie fans with her catchy retro-chic hit in the early 2000s, her sound wasn’t until she hooked up with producer and collaboration producer Björn Yttling from Peter Bjorn and John. Armed with sensual vocals barely supported by a quirky, bass-heavy electronic sound, Li launched her first Little Bit EP 2007 on her own label, LL Recordings. She was first on Swedish MTV the same year and the video for “Little Bit” was named at the Swedish Grammy Awards for best video. She immediately signed the Little Bit EP and her first album, Youth Novels in 2008, with Atlantic for worldwide distribution. The album was a worldwide success and Li boosted her awareness by touring and scored a guest place on the debut album of Swedish producer Kleerup and was featured on late-night talk shows.

In 2011, she returned with her sophomore effort, Wounded Rhymes, which has been critically lauded throughout the world. It was a hit in Scandinavia. Singles “Get Some,” “I Follow Rivers,” and “Youth knows no pain” went into the U.S. Top 40. She then toured Europe and North America in 2012 and performed at a number of summer festivals including Belgium’s Pukkelpop and the Helsinki Flow Festival. In 2013 Lykke Li played the lead singer “I’m Waiting Here” on David Lynch’s second album The Big Dream. The that year she was back in studio to create her third album I Never Learn, released in May 2014, alongside Yttling and Greg Kurstin (the Shins, Foster the people, Lily Allen). A more introspective affair centred on a tough breakdown, I never learned was yet another critical favourite.

In 2016, the Swedish-American band Liv has teamed up with Lyke Li, Pontus Winnberg (Miike Snow), Björn Yttling (Peter Bjorn and John) and Jeff Bhasker, billed as “ABBA and Fleetwood Mac’s lovechild.” That year they released a couple of songs, with two more coming in 2017. She released her fourth studio album the next year, so sad and sexy. Her first sans Yttling was a trap, featuring trap themes and guest appearances from Aminé & Rostam Batmanglij, Jeff Bhasker, Malay, Skrillex, Emile Haynie, and many more. A 2019 EP, still sad and sexy, was a continuation of Li’s previous album, including various remixes and alternating versions.

When she captured Indie Fans’ attention with her catchy, retro-chic singles in the early 2000s, it’s not until she teamed up with Peter Bjorn & John producer and frequent collaborator Björn Yttling that her sound could be heard. Armed with sensual vocals barely supported by a bass-heavy electric dance sound, Li has released its debut EP, the Little Bit of 2007, on its own new LL Recordings label. She first appeared on Swedish MTV the same year and the video for “Little Bit” at the Swedish Grammy Awards was nominated for the best video. She soon signed the Little Bit EP and her first album, the Youth Novels 2008, with Atlantic. The album proved to be an international success and Li increased her visibility by touring a guest spot on the debut album of Swedish producer Kleerup, and on late night TV shows.

They released a couple of singles that year and in 2017 two more came. She released her fourth studio album the following year, so sadly so sexy. Her first one without Yttling was trap elements, guest appearances by Aminé and Rostam Batmanglij, as well as Jeff Bhasker, Malay, Skrillex, Emile Haynie and others. A 2019 EP, still sad and sexy, was an extension of Li’s previous album, with multiple remixes and other versions.
