Lisa del Giocondo Wiki/Bio

Mona Lisa, also known as Portrait of Lisa Gherardini, wife of Francesco del Giocondo, of La Gioconda in Italy, La Joconde in England, an oil painting on a wooden panel of poplars by the most famous paintings in the world, Leonardo da Vinci. It was painted between 1503 and 1519 when Leonardo lived in Florence and currently hangs in the Louvre Museum, Paris, where in the 21st century he remained a pilgrimage site. The inscrutable smile of the sitter and her unknown identity have made the artwork a source of constant research and curiosity.

The painting portrays a woman who has a faraway landscape as a backdrop in a half-body portrait. But this brief description of an apparently typical composition does not convey much sense of Leonardo’s performance. The three-quarter view in which the position of the sitter is mainly directed towards the viewer broke out from the usual position used in italian art and quickly became the convention for all portraits, one which was utilised well into the 21st century. The smooth sculptural face of this individual demonstrates Leonardo’s ability to handle sfumato (use subtle shading) and his awareness of the muscles and cranium under the skin.

The carefully painted veil, the finely worked tresses and the precise reproduction of the folded linen are evidence of Leonardo’s thorough observations and his unending patience. In addition, the sensual contours of the hair and clothing of the sitter echo in the forms of the valleys and rivers that lie behind it. In the picture, especially visible in the tiny smile of the sitter, the general sense of harmony embodies Leonardo’s idea of the cosmic relationship between people and nature, making this painting a lasting record of Leonardo’s vision. The Mona Lisa sets the bar for all future portraits in its beautiful blending of site and scene.

There was a lot of curiosity and debate about the identity of the sitter of the portrait. Students and historians have made many interpretations, including that she was Lisa del Giocondo (born Gherardini), the wife of Florentine trader Francisco di Bartolomeo del Giocondo. The artist biographer Giorgio Vasari initially suggested this identity around 1550. Another notion was that Leonardo’s mother, Caterina, might have been the model.

This interpretation was made, among other things, by Sigmund Freud, who seemed to believe that the mysterious smile of Mona Lisa emerged from a memory, maybe inconscious, of the smile of Caterina. One third idea was that the picture was actually Leonardo’s self-portrait, given the similarity of the sitter to the face of the artist. Some experts suggested that the artist’s purpose was to disguise himself as a woman. The identity of the sitter has not been definitely confirmed. In the 21st century, numerous attempts to resolve controversy by searching for the bones of Lisa Del Giocondo to test her DNA and recreate her face have not been concluded.

The image was concealed in the French palaces over the ages, until during the French Revolution (1787–99) insurgents claimed the royal collection as the property of the people. Following a spell in Napoleon’s chamber, around the turn of the 19th century Mona Lisa was put in the Louvre Museum.

Career

The painting was stolen in 1911 and immediately caused a stir in the media. People flocked to the Louvre to see the vacant room where the artwork formerly hung up, the Museum’s paintings director quit and even the poet Guillaume Apollinaire and artist Pablo Picasso were detained as suspects. Two years later, a Florentine art dealer warned local authorities that a guy sought to sell his painting to him.

In the false bottom of a trunk of Vincenzo Peruggia, an Italian immigrant who had briefly fitted the glass at the Louvre on a range of paintings, including Mona Lisa, the police located a portrait. He and maybe two other workers were hiding overnight in a closet, taking portraits from the wall on the morning of August 21, 1911 and running away without a doubt. Peruggia was caught, trialled and detained while Mona Lisa visited Italy before returning to France triumphantly.

Mona Lisa, named the most threatened work of art in the Louver during World War II, was moved to various areas in the countryside of France and returned to the museum in 1945 after peace was declared. Later, he went to the United States in 1963 at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City and the National Art Gallery in D.C. for roughly 40,000 people a day. In 1974 it also visited Tokyo and Moscow.

Scholars have noticed that Mona Lisa’s age is relatively decent. The poplar panel reveals some traces of warping of the resistance to its original frame and early restoration braces. The back of the artwork was filled with dovetails in order to prevent the enlargement of a minor crack that was apparent around the centre of the top edge of the picture. Later, large canvas were plastered over the crack and the top dovetail replaced.

After numerous attacks in 1956, the Mona Lisa protective glass was replaced by a bulletproof case, one of which damaged an area near the left elbow of the figure. In 1974 during the work visit in Tokyo, Mona Lisa therefore evaded damages from acts of vandalism and in 2009, when a museum goer hurled a ceramic mug at it.
