Dave Edmunds Wiki/Bio

Dave Edmunds was born in Wales on 15 April 1944 (77 years old). He’s a famous vocalist. Roots are rarely as pure as Dave Edmunds. He has stayed faithful in the fifties and sixties of rock and roll – rock and roll history halted for Edmunds somewhere in 1963, after the first singles of the Beach Boys but before the hits of the Beatles. After establishing himself as a hotshot lead guitarist in the blues-rockers Love Sculpture, he established his solo career by painstakingly re-creating oldies in his own studio, frequently recording every track by himself. In the late 1970s he reached his height when he formed Rockpile together with former Schwarz bassist Nick Lowe.

Dave Edmunds never abandoned his music in Cardiff, Wales, when he was a teenager. Phil Spector’s recordings as well as American blues and country captivated him. Edmunds began performing in several British blues bands in the early 1960s, finally establishing Love Sculpture, which was then replaced by Terry Williams, with bassist John Williams and drummer Bob Jones. Love Sculptures was playing bluesy and psychedelic interpretations of classical melodies, and in 1968 their interpretation of the Sabre dance of Khachaturian reached a British Top Five. Within a year, the group succeeded and collapsed.

Edmunds returned home in Wales to build Rockfield in Monmouthshire, the eight-track studio, where he holed up and taught himself to re-create the sounds of his favourite recordings. Many of these recordings were solely recorded by Edmunds, generally with the bass support from Williams. In fact, one of the first albums from the Rockfield sessions was one of the least representative of his approach since he interpreted the underlying material instead of copying it. Edmunds’ upgraded version of “I Hear You Knockin'” from Smiley Lewis was a fluke hit that reached the Top Ten in both America and the United Kingdom, followed by a compilation of conventional oldies swiftly, which became a small success. He recorded the stuff that became his second album, Subtle as a Flying Mallet, and made albums of similar-minded rockers such as Ducks Deluxe, Flamin’ Groovies and Brinsley Schwarz.

Edmunds appeared in the film Stardust in 1974 and helped to arrange the soundtrack. He also produced the last record of the Brinsleys, New Favourites, that year. During the recording he found a bond with bassist Nick Lowe, who became his major collaborator over the next few years. Lowe helped Edmunds move from the cover and to play new songs, written largely by Lowe, which re-created the spirit of old rock & roll. After the 1975 release of Subtle as the Flying Mallet, Edmunds began to focus upon Lowe’s own work and searched for newer songs and obscure oldies in that style, producing two top ten U.K. successes with “Baby I Love You” and “Born to Be With You.” In response Lowe joined Rockpile, Edmunds’ touring band, with Terry Williams and Billy Bremner, a bass drummer. The pair worked heavily together for the first record in 1977 was Get It, which was Edmunds’ debut release for the Swan Song label Led Zeppelin.

Get It was welcomed, like the 1978 Tracks on Wax 4, Edmunds’ first band recorded with Rockpile. At that time, Rockpile regularly toured, receiving great acclaim in the UK media, which linked the band together with the new movement of the new wave, partly on account of their inebriated, wild energy. In 1979, the band moved into the studio simultaneously to cut Edmunds’ repetition When Necessary and Lowe’s Arbeit of Lust and documented the proceedings for the BBC Born Fighter programme.

Career

Both records were successful with Repeat When Necessary spawning “Girls Talk” as the biggest British hit and Juice Newton copied it later for her breakout success. “Queen of Hearts” Top 20. Rockpile entered the studio in 1980 to record Seconds of Pleasure, the group’s first full-length album. During the recording, conflicts started to arise between Edmunds and Lowe, resulting in an album which could not replicate the live sound of the band. Seconds of Pleasure were a moderate success, but after their supportive tour the group disbanded.

Twangin’s first post-Rockpile album was released in 1981 with Williams and Bremner’s participation. The album was a minor hit and produced a hit cover of “Almost Saturday Night” by John Fogerty. The next year, Edmunds signed D.E. 7, another somewhat successful record, with Columbia. Not surprisingly, Lynne gave Edmunds a measured sound to a veteran prog rock that encouraged him to dabble with synths and drummers. During divided reviews, information was popular in the United States, which resulted in the single “Slipping Away.” The two followed the same formula for the unqualified 1984 Riff Raff bomb.

Although he has had his share of hits during the course of his long career – his 1970 cover of the “I Hear You Knockin'” standard of Smiley Lewis – Dave Edmunds was continuously underestimated and underappreciated. It may be because he is a strongly blue-collar musician and a root-rock classicist (not a revivalist) and not an innovator, he received less from scribes, for whom picture and originality normally prevail.
