Mahendra Nath Pandey is an Indian politician who currently serves as the Minister of Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises. He previously served as the Minister of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship and as a Member of the Lok Sabha for Chandauli.
Mahendra Nath Pandey (born 15 October 1957) is an Indian politician who currently serves as the Minister of Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises. He previously served as the Minister of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship and as a Member of Parliament for Chandauli. He is a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party and the party’s Uttar Pradesh unit’s president. Between 2016 and 2017, he also served as Union Minister of State for the Ministry of Human Resource Development. He serves in Modi’s second cabinet. On 30 May 2019, he was appointed as the Government of India’s Cabinet Minister for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship.
Pandey was born in a Brahmin family in Pakhanpur, Uttar Pradesh to Sudhakar Pandey and Chandrawati Pandey. He holds a master’s degree in journalism and a doctorate in Hindi from Banaras Hindu University. In 1973, he was elected president of the C.M. Anglo Bengali College students’ union. Five years later, he was elected general secretary of the Banaras Hindu University students’ union.Pandey was imprisoned for five months during the Emergency.
He joined the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh in 1978. He participated in the Ram Janmabhoomi movement and was charged under the National Security Act by the state government led by Mulayam Singh Yadav.
Pandey was first elected to the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly in 1991. He was re-elected to the assembly in 1996. He was appointed Minister of State for Housing and Urban Development in the Kalyan Singh government the following year. Between 1998 and 2000, he also served as Minister of State for Planning (independent charge) and as Minister of State for Panchayati Raj between 2000 and 2002.
Pandey was announced as a candidate for the Bharatiya Janata Party’s Chandauli constituency in Purvanchal ahead of the 2014 Indian general election. He was elected to the Lok Sabha by a margin of approximately 150,000 votes over his nearest rival Anil Maurya of the Bahujan Samaj Party. He was later appointed to the Standing Committee on Rural Development and the Ministry of Steel and Mines’ Consultative Committee.

Pandey was appointed General Secretary of the students’ union at Banaras Hindu University in 1978. He spent five months in prison during the Emergency. He joined the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh in 1978. (RSS). He was also a member of the Ram Janmabhoomi Movement. At the time, Mulayam Singh Yadav’s UP state government charged him with violating the National Security Act. He was elected to the UP legislative assembly in 1991. This was his first significant political accomplishment. He was re-elected to the assembly in 1996. This time, Kalyan Singh was elected Chief Minister (CM) of Uttar Pradesh.
Pandey served as Minister of State for Housing and Urban Development during this time period. In 1997, he was presented with this portfolio. He also served as an independent Minister of State for Planning from 1998 to 2000. He served as the Minister of State for Panchayati Raj from 2000 to 2002. His first opportunity to serve as a Union minister came in 2016, during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s major cabinet reshuffle. He was sworn in as Union Minister of State for Human Resource Development on July 5, 2016. Satyapal Singh succeeded him on August 31, 2017. Following this, he was elected President of the BJP’s Uttar Pradesh unit, succeeding Keshav Prasad Maurya.
Pandey was appointed Minister of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship in the 17th Lok Sabha by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a Cabinet announcement on 31 May 2019.
