Charles Koch is an American businessman and philanthropist who co-owns and leads Koch Industries. Charles and his younger brother David succeeded their father, Fred Koch, who began the business in 1940. The brothers, particularly Charles, were instrumental in extending and growing the business into one of the largest privately held companies in the United States. Charles was born as one of four sons to an industrialist. From an early age, he was brilliant and diligent.
He was also an exceptionally bright student who attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) to study engineering and obtained two Master’s degrees in mechanical and chemical engineering. Following a brief stint at Arthur D. Little, Inc., Charles joined his father’s business, Rock Island Oil & Refining Company. He soon rose to the position of president of the company, which he called Koch Industries in honour of his father. He is also interested in politics, and he and his brother David have contributed significantly to libertarian and conservative think tanks and campaigns. He is a significant philanthropist, having contributed millions of dollars to research, policy, and educational endeavours.
Charles Koch was born in Wichita, Kansas, on November 1, 1935, to Mary and Fred Chase Koch. His father was an engineer who subsequently became a businessman, founding what would become Koch Industries. Frederick, David, and William are Charles’ three brothers.
He studied engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). In 1957, he got a Bachelor of Science degree in general engineering and a Master of Science degree in mechanical engineering in 1958. He later earned another Master’s degree, earning his M.S. He earned a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering in 1960 and immediately began working for Arthur D. Little, Inc. This work, however, lasted only a few months, as he returned to Wichita in 1961 to join his father’s business, Rock Island Oil & Refining Company.
He was a diligent young man, determined to grow the family business, which had developed into a medium-sized oil company by the late 1960s. In 1967, he became president of the company and renamed it Koch Industries in honour of his father. Since then, he has also served as Chairman of the Board and CEO.
Career
He worked relentlessly to expand the firm, which is now involved in a variety of industries, including the manufacturing, refining, and distribution of petroleum, chemicals, energy, fibre, intermediates and polymers, minerals, fertilisers, pulp and paper.
He joined Koch Industries as a director in 1982 and also serves on the boards of directors of several other companies, including Entrust Financial Corp. and Georgia-Pacific LLC, which manufactures paper and pulp products.
Under Charles Koch’s guidance, Koch Industries expanded at an unparalleled rate and now operates in about 60 countries and employs more than 100,000 people.
Koch Industries has invested over $70 billion in acquisitions and other capital expenditures over the last few years and now owns Invista, Georgia-Pacific, Molex, Flint Hills Resources, Koch Pipeline, Koch Fertilizer, Koch Minerals, and Matador Cattle Company.
Charles Koch attributes his amazing success to the corporate model he pioneered, Market Based Management (MBM). In his 2007 book, ‘The Science of Success: How Market-Based Management Built the World’s Largest Private Company,’ he details this theory in detail.
The Market-Based Management Institute, a non-profit educational organisation, teaches MBM ideas to students, educators, community leaders, and government officials through their affiliation with Wichita State University (WSU).
He is a libertarian who supports free-market policies and advocacy organisations. He is a supporter of several free market-oriented educational institutions, including the Cato Institute, the Institute for Humane Studies, the Bill of Rights Institute, and George Mason University’s Mercatus Center.
