Vista’s founder, chairman, and CEO is Robert F. Smith. He is responsible for Vista’s investment strategy and decision-making, as well as its governance and investor relations. Mr. Smith serves on the Investment Committees for Vista’s Flagship, Foundation, Endeavor, and Perennial Funds, as well as the firm’s Executive Committee, which governs and makes decisions on the firm’s overall management and strategic direction, and the Private Equity Management Committee, which makes decisions on Vista’s overall private equity business. Mr. Smith was born in Denver, Colorado, to parents who both earned Doctor of Education (EdD) degrees. He received his engineering training at Cornell University, getting a B.S. in Chemical Engineering in 1985. Mr. Smith’s leadership was recognised by Cornell University in 2016 when the institution he graduated from was renamed the Robert Frederick Smith School of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering. He served as President of the Black Business Students’ Association and the Japan Business Association while getting his MBA from Columbia Business School with honours. Following college, he worked for Goodyear Tire & Rubber and then Kraft General Foods, where he earned two US and two European patents for coffee filtration devices.
After earning his MBA in 1994, he joined Goldman Sachs in New York City and then moved to Silicon Valley to work in technology investment banking. Mr. Smith has been invited to lecture about finance, entrepreneurship, innovation, leadership, and related themes at a range of venues, including the World Economic Forum and The Milken Institute, among others. Additionally, he has appeared in a number of interviews for television, print magazines, podcasts, and other forms of media. Mr. Smith is the Fund II Foundation’s founding director and president. The Foundation, founded in 2014, awards grants to organisations that work to preserve African American experiences and culture for future generations, to rectify human rights violations, to promote music education for children, to protect the environment through advocacy and awareness of the benefits of outdoor recreation, and to uphold critical American values such as empowerment, innovation, and security for all. Mr. Smith has been a vocal advocate for businesses to hire minority interns in STEM professions. Fund II Foundation created InternX, a platform that connects prominent organisations with diverse internship candidates, in 2019 under Mr. Smith’s direction. Mr. Smith and the Fund II Foundation earned the UNCF’s highest honour, the Frederick D. Patterson Award, in 2016. The UNCF is a nonprofit organisation dedicated to enhancing underserved students’ access to higher education. Mr. Smith received the UNCF President’s Award in 2019 and announced a matching donation of all funds raised during the gala event during the award ceremony.
Additionally, Mr. Smith made a $20 million personal gift to Cornell University’s College of Engineering in 2016, along with an additional $10 million in scholarships for African Americans and women pursuing technology-related degrees.Mr. Smith is an active member of his alma university, serving on the Cornell Engineering College Council.
