United Technologies Corporation (UTC) is a multi-industry American corporation with a strong focus on aerospace products and services, particularly jet engines. United Aircraft Corporation was founded in 1934 and changed its name to its current form in 1975. Hartford, Connecticut is where the company’s headquarters are located.

Pratt & Whitney and UTC Aerospace Systems, which was founded by the merging of Hamilton Sundstrand and B.F. Goodrich, are two of UTC’s primary aerospace business segments. Pratt & Whitney is a leading manufacturer of large jet engines for commercial and military aircraft, as well as small engines for regional/commuter and business aircraft. The PW4000 turbofan engine series for wide-body commercial aircraft, the PW2000 and PW6000 turbofan engines for narrow-body jetliners, the V2500 turbofan (as the lead partner in the International Aero Engines [IAE] consortium), the F100 and F119 jet fighter engines, and the RL10 and RD-180 rocket engines (the latter in partnership with Russian rocket maker NPO Energomash) are among its products. Engine and flight controls, propellers, environmental controls for aeroplanes, spacecraft, and submarines, space life-support systems, fuel cells, and microelectronics are all manufactured by Hamilton Sundstrand. Goodrich manufactures aircraft wheels, brakes, and landing gear.

Otis Elevator Company, which makes elevators, escalators, moving walks, and shuttle systems, and Carrier Corporation, which makes heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning systems, building controls, and commercial and transport refrigeration equipment, are two of UTC’s other key units. UTC employed almost 200,000 individuals in 2016, with half of them based outside of the United States.

UTC has its roots in the Boeing Airplane & Transport Corporation, which was founded in 1928 by William E. Boeing and held controlling interests in Boeing Airplane Company, Boeing Air Transport Inc., and Pacific Air Transport (see Boeing Company). Within a year, the company was renamed United Aircraft and Transport Corporation, and it purchased a number of aircraft and aircraft component manufacturers, including Sikorsky Aviation, Stearman Aircraft, Avion (later Northrop Aircraft), Chance Vought (aircraft), Hamilton (propellers and aircraft), and Pratt & Whitney (propellers and aircraft) (engines). It merged four smaller airlines into United Airlines and made it a subsidiary in another two years. United Aircraft and Transport Corporation was disbanded in 1934 in response to legislation forbidding airlines from affiliating with aircraft manufacturers, resulting in three independent firms. Manufacturing facilities west of the Mississippi River were renamed Boeing Airplane Company, while those east of the river were renamed United Aircraft Corporation, and all transportation services were consolidated into United Airlines. Pratt & Whitney, Sikorsky, Hamilton Standard (later Hamilton Sundstrand), and Chance Vought were among the companies retained by United Aircraft Corporation. Until the early twenty-first century, the first three companies remained fundamental parts of United Aircraft and eventually UTC.

Frederick B. Rentschler, a successful businessman, founded Pratt & Whitney. Pratt and Whitney, a machine-tool manufacturer, presented Rentschler with start-up capital, idle plant space, and a company name in 1925, allowing him to establish an aircraft engine manufacturer. By the end of the year, the new company’s air-cooled Wasp radial piston engine had shown to be significantly superior to the water-cooled engines of the period, and it served as the foundation for a variety of piston engines and the company’s ongoing growth in the 1930s and 1940s under United Aircraft.

During World War II, the high demand for Pratt & Whitney piston engines—more than 360,000 engines were exported for the war effort—diverted the company’s attention away from early jet-engine development, allowing competitors General Electric and Westinghouse to overtake it. Nonetheless, Pratt & Whitney had jumped ahead of the competition with its first turbojet design, the J57, in the early 1950s. Around the same time, the close relationship between United Aircraft’s Pratt & Whitney and Vought Aircraft units began to cause conflict-of-interest issues, with rival engine manufactures hesitant to do business with Vought and other aircraft builders hesitant to utilise Pratt & Whitney engines. As a result, in 1954, Vought Aircraft was split from United Aircraft.

Pratt & Whitney began working on a more efficient engine for wide-body aircraft in 1965. With its application to new versions of Boeing and McDonnell Douglas transports, including the Boeing 747, the JT9D turbofan, which incorporated many new technology in structures, aerodynamics, and materials to increase efficiency and dependability, ushered in a new age in commercial aviation. In 1983, Pratt & Whitney founded IAE alongside companies from Germany, the United Kingdom, Italy, and Japan to develop the V2500 turbofan for Airbus Industrie jetliners. The V2500 first flew on the narrow-body Airbus A320 in 1989. Pratt & Whitney developed the F100 engine for military aircraft, which saw service in 1974 with the US Air Force’s F-15. It also created the F119 engine for the Lockheed Martin/Boeing F-22 Raptor stealth aircraft for the United States Air Force (first flown in 1997).

In the 1990s, Pratt & Whitney and NPO Energomash signed a sales-representative and technology-use agreement for the latter’s rocket engines. The collaboration also resulted in the development of the RD-180 liquid-fuel rocket engine, which will power Lockheed Martin’s Atlas III commercial launch vehicle. In the year 2000, the first Russian-powered Atlas III was launched.
