Johan Langquist is a Swedish singer who rose to prominence as the band Candlemass’s original lead vocalist. He is best known for his work with the band Candlemass and was initially brought on as a session vocalist for the band’s debut LP, Epicus Doomicus Metallicus, which is considered a classic in the doom metal field. In contrast to his successor Marcolin in Messiah, Johan’s vocals are more of a baritone and a lower pitched voice as contrasted to subsequent singers’ higher and more operatic tone. In addition, Johan’s vocals are lower in pitch.

Langquist has been primarily active with hard rock and pop groups outside of Candlemass; in recent years, he has made short visits to Candlemass and performed live with them for the first time during their 20th anniversary event in 2007. As of 2018, he has taken over as the band’s primary vocalist; since then, he has contributed to two further albums with the group.

The 23rd of August, 1963, saw Langquist being born in Jarfalla. It is known that his first band was Jonah Quizz, a heavy metal band that was inspired by bands like Judas Priest and 80s Metal. Although much of his personal life is unknown, it is known that Jonah Quizz was his first band. The band began recording demos in 1979, and they only recorded two before disbanding in 1986. During the same year, Johan was recruited to provide session vocals for the first album of a fledgling Swedish doom metal band called Candlemass.

After recording six songs, the band issued their first album, Epicus Doomicus Metallicus, in June 1986. This album is credited with popularizing the “Epic Doom Metal” concept and has since become an essential work in the doom music genre. However, when it came time to try to travel or perform live, Langquist had begun working on a pop project, and as a result, he refused to tour or perform live with the band despite the many efforts that Candlemass made to get him to remain even though the band had made several attempts to make him stay.

Consequently, the band would not play live again until May 1987, when they found a replacement vocalist in Messiah Marcolin. Following his departure from the band in 1991, Marcolin contacted the other members to inquire about the possibility of rejoining them. He participated in the band’s rehearsals and recorded four songs with them, all included in the Doomology box set. In the end, Thomas Vikstrom would be the one to take on the vocalist role for the album Chapter VI.

On March 31, 2007, in Kolingsborg in Stockholm, Candlemass would play their 20th Anniversary event. It would be a career-spanning two-hour set featuring vocalists from the band’s past, present, and future. Langquist, one of those singers, stood out in particular since it was his first live performance with the band. They played five out of the six songs from the album Epicus. This live performance was published as part of a 20th Anniversary Party compilation later that year.

Notably, Langquist had also participated in a few rehearsals with the band that would eventually feature on Doomology that same year. The album would be released in November of that year. Langquist eventually became a member of the Swedish hard rock band Impulsia in 2008, and the band would record their first album the following year. During the same year, an anthology of demos created by Jonah Quizz would be restored and made available under the title Anthology 1980-1982.

The performance at Roadburn Festival was scheduled to take place in 2010; however, due to the ash cloud produced by Iceland’s Eyjafjallajokull volcano, air transport was severely impacted, and Candlemass were forced to cancel their presence. The performance of Epicus Doomicus Metallicus would be rescheduled for the following year’s Roadburn festival and include Langquist on vocals. Two years later, a vinyl version of this concert was made available via Svart Records.

During the following two years, Langquist made intermittent appearances on stage with the band. On September 3, 2018, it was reported that Candlemass would return to their origins and that Langquist would rejoin the bar as the main singer. His first concert back with the band was on September 8, 2018, at the Southern Discomfort Festival in Kristiansand. Candlemass did have a new album in the works when Langquist rejoined the bar, and the record was scheduled for an initial release in the fall of 2018.

It was revealed that Langquist would be singing on the next album on October 5th, 2018, with a release date set for Spring 2019; this would be his first record with the band in over 33 years.[1] Notably, “Astorolus – The Great Octopus” would go on to get multiple award nominations, the most notable of which were for The Grammy Award in the United States for “Best Metal Performance” and The Grammys Award in Sweden, the latter of which the band would go on to win. Throughout 2019, Langquist is scheduled to participate in significant touring with the band to promote The Door to Doom.

On January 31, 2020, the band announced The Pendulum, which includes six songs not previously published from The Door To Doom. A live CD starring Johan that was recorded in July 2020 when Green Valley was under lockdown would be released the following year in Green Valley. After spending 2021 and 2022 traveling the globe, Candlemass wants to release its next album, Sweet Evil Sun, in November 2022. This will be Johan’s third appearance on a Candlemass studio recording.

On June 2, 2012, Candlemass announced via their website that vocalist Robert Lowe had left the band. Lowe explained that leaving the band was “a tough decision for the band,” Mats Levén, a longtime friend and collaborator of Candlemass, replaced him for the band’s upcoming shows. Levén is known for his work with Yngwie Malmsteen, Therion, Treat, and At Vance, among other bands.

Levén had previously collaborated with Leif Edling in the bands Abstrakt Algebra and Krux, and his vocals may be heard on demo recordings taken from sessions for Candlemass and King of the Grey Islands that are included on the compilation album Doomology. In addition, former Opeth and Spiritual Beggars keyboardist Per Wiberg appeared on stage with the band during these live performances.

Candlemass was selected as the best Swedish hard rock/metal band of all time by the contributors of Sweden Rock Magazine in January 2013. Sweden Rock Magazine is the most widely circulated complex rock magazine in Scandinavia and Sweden’s most commonly read music magazine. To commemorate the publication’s 100th issue, a special jubilee edition was released with a list of the top 100 Swedish hard rock and metal bands of all time.

In conjunction with this, it was also disclosed that Candlemass and the death metal band Entombed (No. 2 on the list) were to play together at a special jubilee event in Stockholm that the magazine planned. The concert was to celebrate the magazine’s 25th anniversary. Candlemass served as headlining at the Vasby Rock Festival in their hometown of Upplands Vasby in July 2014.
Despite previous assertions that Psalms for the Dead would be the band’s last album, bassist Leif Edling has declared that he is open to recording new songs with Candlemass once again.

On June 3, 2016, to coincide with the celebration of the 30th anniversary of Epicus Doomicus Metallicus, Candlemass released the extended play (EP) titled Death Thy Lover. Additionally, on April 29, 2016, the band published a coffee-table book chronicling their history. The book also included a CD with rare music from the band’s early history (including the Witchcraft demo), two DVDs with three live performances, and two CDs offering top choices by Leif Edling and Messiah Marcolin separately.

After being apart from the band for 32 years, Johan Langquist returned to Candlemass on September 3, 2018, when the band announced. “We wanted to find our way back to the roots of Candlemass, back to the soul and essence of the band,” the band declared in their statement. Since Johan Langquist has rejoined the bar, we have high hopes that this will infuse us with fresh enthusiasm and help us restart the heart of doom.

We have no idea whether it will endure another ten years or even five, but even if it just gives us one more year to continue having a good time and performing the music we like so much, it will have been well worth it. The cycle is now complete; Johan has returned! It will be the first studio album released by Candlemass since 2012’s Psalms for the Dead and the first album recorded by the band with Langquist since 1986’s Epicus Doomicus Metallicus. The band also revealed that they were recording a new album that would be released in 2019.

Candlemass is a Swedish epic doom band that has been around for over four decades. It is not an exaggeration to state that they are still one of the most brutal metal bands in the world. The band has been nominated for a Grammy. The band is considered to be the pioneers of epic doom metal because of the influential albums “Epicus Doomicus Metallicus” (1986) and “Nightfall” (1987), both of which were released between 1986 and 1987. They altered the landscape of metal music all over the globe using their menacing riffs, devastating rhythmic onslaught, and dramatic vocals.

The band, formed around founder member Leif Edling finds its way back to its beginnings and finally releases the long-awaited, earth-shaking new full-length album, “Sweet Evil Sun,” released on November 18th, 2022, through Napalm Records. Reunited with excellent original singer Johan Langquist, the band formed around Edling finds its way back to its roots. After toiling away at this monumental work of art for 18 months, “Sweet Evil Sun” is finally complete.

Candlemass recaptures the grandeur of their early years while delving into themes of aspiration, struggle, hope, and disappointment. The first tune, “Wizard Of The Vortex,” quickly enchants the listener with a riff that is so potent that they cannot help but get captivated by it. The title track, “Sweet Evil Sun,” begins with foreboding guitar feedback before sludging into a riff that is as heavy as hell. Meanwhile, Johan Langquist masterfully warbles between melancholy, luring parts and a catchy chorus throughout the song.

His soaring vocals complimented every riff and tone, and his voice emerged as an instrument in its own right. The gloomy, classic rock-tinged Nordic metal hymn “Scandinavian Gods” exposes an excellent musical interaction between slow and heavy drumming, droning guitars, and majestic vocals as they impart enigmatic stories of Scandinavian mythology to the next generation of doom enthusiasts. The song “Scandinavian Gods” exemplifies this excellent musical interplay.
